Team Releases: Preseason All-Americans (Updated)

BALTIMORE – Eight members of the Syracuse men's lacrosse team were selected as preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse on Monday, Nov. 30. Headlining the Orange's selections was junior longstick midfielder Joel White (Cortland, N.Y.) who was picked to the first team. Syracuse and Duke each had eight players recognized, the most of any school.

In addition to White, junior defenseman John Lade (Randolph, N.J.) and senior attackman Cody Jamieson (Six Nations, Ontario) and were picked to the second team. Junior Stephen Keogh (Toronto, Ontario) was named to the third team at attack. Junior midfielder Josh Amidon (Lafayette, N.Y.) and junior goalie John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.) were also named to the third team. Junior midfielder Jovan Miller (Syracuse, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Matt Tierney (Montclair, N.J.) were honorable mention choices.

White, a 2010 Orange co-captain , was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American in 2009. He finished second on the team with 63 ground balls. He also contributed five goals and three assists. As the team's primary longstick midfielder, White helped lead a Syracuse unit that finished fourth nationally in scoring defense (7.38 gpg), the team's highest finish since the NCAA began tracking the national leaders in 1996. White was also picked to the 2009 NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team for his role in the Orange's run to the national championship.

Lade was also a key component in Syracuse's defense. A 2009 honorable mention All-American, Lade started all 18 games after transferring from Villanova and collected 53 ground balls, the most for an Orange close defender.

Jamieson played in six games and tallied nine goals and three assists a year ago. Eight of his goals and all three assists came in SU's four NCAA Tournament games, including the game-winner in overtime of the national title game versus Cornell. He joined White on the 2009 NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team.

Like White and Lade, Keogh was an honorable mention All-American in 2009. He led the Orange with 49 goals, tied for the seventh-best season total in school history. Keogh led the nation with 12 man-up goals and ranked fourth nationally in goals per game (2.72). He set career highs with five goals and seven total points in SU's 2009 season-opening win against Providence.

Amidon provided some scoring punch as a member of the team's second midfield last season. He registered 14 goals, including a pair of game-winners. Amidon also had nine assists on the year.

Miller was one of the Orange's top defensive midfielders last season. He played in all 18 games and tallied two goals and six assists. He scooped up a career-best five ground balls in the NCAA semifinal win against Duke.

Tierney started every game last season on close defense. He was named to the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse Team of the Week for his performance in the team's quarterfinal win against Maryland after he helped hold the Terps' starting attack without a goal in an 11-6 Orange victory.

Princeton

The long Thanksgiving weekend just ended, and December begins tomorrow, which of course means lacrosse season can't be that far away.

The Princeton men's lacrosse team, under new coach Chris Bates, opens its season a little less than three months from now with a Feb. 27 home game against Hofstra. When the 2010 season does begin, Princeton will have five preseason All-Americas, including two first-team selections.

Inside Lacrosse got the jump on the new year by releasing its All-America teams today. Princeton junior Jack McBride was named first-team on attack, while sophomore defenseman Chad Wiedmaier was also named to the first team. Both were second-team All-Americas last spring.

In addition to those two, Princeton also had sophomore goalie Tyler Fiorito named to the second team and seniors Scott MacKenzie (M) and Jeremy Hirsch (D) named honorable mention.

McBride scored 35 goals a year ago, a team high, and his 42 points lead all returning Princeton players. Wiedmaier started every game on defense as a freshman and earned first-team All-Ivy League honors, becoming the first Princeton freshman defender – and third Princeton freshman regardless of position – to be so honored.

Fiorito, who started every game as a freshman as well, ranked fourth in Division I in goals-against (7.40) and 11th in save percentage (.587).

Hirsch has started every game on defense the last two years, while MacKenzie is the lone returnee from the first midfield after a season in which he scored 13 goals and added 16 assists, the most by a returning player.

Princeton went 13-3 a year ago, won a share of the Ivy League championship, and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Loyola

BALTIMORE – Inside Lacrosse named three Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse players to its Preseason All-America teams in the 2010 edition of the Face-Off Yearbook.

Junior faceoff specialist John Schiavone (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) was named to the All-America Third Team, while senior defender Steve Layne (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and senior attacker Cooper MacDonnell (Darien, Conn./Darien) earned All-America Honorable Mention.

In his first year as a starting faceoff specialist, Schiavone became one of the nation's premier players at the 'X' in 2009. He won 58.9-percent of his faceoffs (149 of 253), garnering All-ECAC Second Team laurels in the process.

Schiavone's faceoff percentage was fourth in NCAA Division I and topped the league in the category. He was also second on the Greyhounds, and 19th in the NCAA, with 5.5 ground balls per game, 76 total for the season. His stats, as well as those of Layne and MacDonnell, came against the fifth-toughest schedule in the nation.

Layne continued his strong play on close defense as one of the best lock-down defenders in the country. As a junior in 2009, he earned All-ECAC Second Team honors after helping lead the Greyhounds' defense to an 8.67 goals against average. Layne caused 24 turnovers and picked up 48 groundballs last year.

MacDonnell received All-ECAC Second Team mention in 2009 after leading the Greyhounds in goals for the second consecutive season. The attacker scored 30 goals and had eight assists for 38 points. MacDonnell scored at least one point in all 14 of Loyola's games, tallying one or more goals in 13 contests. He had nine multi-goal outings and scored five twice, both against ranked teams (No. 2 Syracuse and No. 18 Georgetown).

Loyola, which was ranked 15th nationally in the Face-Off Yearbook Coaches' Poll and 16th in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Media Poll, opens its 2010 schedule on Saturday, February 20, when it travels to Annapolis, Md., to face the U.S. Naval Academy.

Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Defender Billy Geist and midfielder Jason Duboe of the Harvard men's lacrosse team have been tabbed to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America team, the publication announced Monday afternoon. The players, both seniors, garnered spots on the honorable mention squad.

Geist, a co-captain of the Crimson from Arnold, Md., was an All-Ivy League honorable mention choice last season after collecting 20 ground balls and causing 11 turnovers. He started all 13 games at defense in 2009, grabbing a season-high four ground balls in Harvard's 11-4 victory over Holy Cross April 18. Geist helped the Crimson rank third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 6.69 goals per game.

Duboe, a native of Long Grove, Ill., who is making is second appearance on the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America honorable mention team, stood second on Harvard with 19 points on 11 goals and eight assists last spring. He amassed a season-high five points on two goals and three assists in a win over archrival Yale April 25 and tallied three man-up goals during his junior season.

Duboe, who was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List last season, earned a spot on the All-Ivy League second team in 2009 after garnering first-team status in 2008. Duboe was also honored on the NEILA All-New England first team for his effort last year and was an Academic All-Ivy choice as a sophomore.

Harvard was recently ranked 12th in the LaxNews preseason national poll and will open its season by hosting Canisius Saturday, Feb. 27.

Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Five members of the Notre Dame men's lacrosse team have garnered preseason All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse. Scott Rodgers (Sr., G) was named to the first team, while Grant Krebs (Sr., M) and Sam Barnes (Sr., D) were second-team selections. Trever Sipperly (Sr., M/FO) and Andrew Irving (Jr., LSM) were honorable mention picks.

The Fighting Irish were tabbed to finish second in the BIG EAST according to a vote by the league's seven head coaches. The 2010 campaign will mark the first season for BIG EAST men's lacrosse. Syracuse was picked to win the conference. Barnes and Rodgers both were named to the coaches' 13-man all-BIG EAST preseason squad. The All-America and all-conference teams appear in the 2010 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook.

Rodgers (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), a fifth-year senior, earned third-team All-America accolades last season from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) as he led all NCAA Division I goalies in goals-against average (6.14) and save percentage (.663). Rodgers established single-season program records for goals-against average and victories (15). The Long Island native was tabbed as the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Player of the Year in addition to being selected as a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee.

Barnes (Branford, Conn./Branford) received honorable mention All-America honors last season during his junior campaign. He was a valuable member to the nation's top-ranked defense as he routinely locked down the opponent's top scorer as a starter in all 16 contests. His 28 ground balls were a single-season career-high total and helped him garner a first-team All-GWLL nod. Barnes notched his first career point with an assist in a 9-7 win over Villanova.

Krebs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) started every game last season and joined his classmate Barnes as an honorable mention All-America pick. Krebs was Notre Dame's leading midfield scorer in 2009 with 29 goals, which ranked second overall on the team. He was third on the squad with 38 total points en route to earning first-team All-GWLL honors. Those figures were career-best totals, while his nine assists tied his career-high mark. Krebs will carry team-best streaks for points (32) and goals (28) into this season.

Irving (McLean, Va./The Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) appeared in all 16 games one year ago and collected a team-best and career-high 51 ground balls. He also posted a career-best three points on one goal and two assists. Irving aided an Irish defense that led the nation in goals-against average with a 6.19 mark, which shattered the program standard (6.66 from the 2007 season).

Sipperly (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) played in all 16 games in 2009 and won 56 percent (85-67) of his faceoff attempts. He picked up a career-high 27 ground balls and tallied the first point of his career with an assist in helping the Irish to a 16-7 win over Ohio State in the title game of the GWLL Tournament.

In 2009, Notre Dame finished with a 15-1 mark, which established program records for wins and winning percentage (.938) for a single season. The Irish posted the first undefeated regular season in team history and captured their second consecutive GWLL tournament title in addition to making their fourth straight NCAA Championship appearance.

Hobart

Hobart senior goalie Max Silberlicht is one of seven goalies named to the 2010 Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America Teams. A starter in each of the past three seasons, he was listed among the magazine's honorable mentions.

Silberlicht played all but 6 minutes and 27 seconds in the cage for Hobart in 2009, compiling 174 saves, a 7-7 record, a .613 save percentage, and a 7.91 goals against average (GAA). He was third in the ECAC Lacrosse League and fifth in the nation in save percentage and second in the conference and 10th in the nation in GAA. Silberlicht's GAA broke his own Hobart Division I season record (8.05 in 2008), while his save percentage was second in Hobart Division I history behind the .633 Fred Pawlikowski '98 posted in 1996.

Silberlicht matched his career-high with 18 saves against UMass last season. He held the Minutemen to a season-low seven goals. Silberlicht also limited Binghamton (4) and Bucknell (2) to their lowest scoring game of the season.

Inexplicably omitted from last season's All-ECAC and All-America teams, Silberlicht enters his senior season with 375 saves, a .580 save percentage, an 8.77 GAA, and a 15-16 record. Among Hobart's Division I goalies, he ranks fourth in career saves (17 behind No. 3 Dan Valente '05), second in career save percentage (.020 shy of Pawlikowski's mark), first in GAA (0.74 better than Valente), and second in wins (1 behind Mike Borsz '03).

Silberlicht is the first Statesman to be named a preseason All-American since Daryl Veltman '08 received honorable mention prior to the 2008 season.

Canisius

Junior midfielder Adam Jones (Owen Sound, Ontario) of the Canisius College men's lacrosse team has been named a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse. Jones, who received honorable mention to the team, was recognized in the publication's annual Face-Off Yearbook for the second-consecutive season.

A two-time first-team All-MAAC selection with the Griffs, Jones led the team with 33 goals in 2009. He finished his sophomore campaign ranked sixth nationally and first among midfielders with 2.75 goals per game.

During his rookie season in 2008, Jones became the first Griff to garner All-America after leading the team to its first MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. In his two seasons at Canisius, Jones has accumulated 85 points and 71 goals.

Jones has also excelled on the international level. The MVP of the U-19 World Championship in 2008, Jones has been named to defending-champion Team Canada's roster for the 2010 Men's Lacrosse World Championship. He was also named the National Junior Player of the Year this past summer and helped the Orangeville Northmen to their second-straight Minto Cup, awarded to the top junior team in Canada.
