Certainly a rules contest needs rules! To avoid being whistled for a major foul, sent to the penalty box, or given a yellow card, please read the rules for the contest. While some of this is done tongue in cheek, we do want people to "play fair" and have an opportunity to win based on knowledge rather than cheating. If you have questions or need clarification, contact Dan (dan@laxpower.com).
2. Current and former lacrosse officials or rules people may enter but are not allowed to win a prize (they may quibble about our questions and answers, but not in an ill-humored manner even if we genuinely deserve it). We will rely on you to identify your status on the entry form.
3. The correct answers to quiz questions will be determined solely by LaxPower. Although LaxPower claims no infallibility or expertise where the knowledge and application of the rules are concerned, it does consult closely with practicing lacrosse officials in the formulation of the quiz questions, the determination of answers, and the preparation of the explanations that are offered. Our hats are off to these officials, who prefer to remain anonymous, for anything positive that these quizzes provide to our visitors.
4. LaxPower assumes no responsibility for submissions that do not reach us for whatever reason, for incorrectly entered e-mail addresses, for the proper operation of its quiz forms, for any other problems or difficulties that a user may experience in the process of taking a quiz or submitting answers, for viruses that eat your answers, or for any drought, disease, or pestilence that may afflict you or the region in which you live.
5. A winner for each installment will be chosen by randomly selecting from those entrants having all (or the most) correct answers Overall winners will be determined by the identifying the entrants who submit the greatest number of correct quiz answers over the course of the entire contest. For example, a person who answered 18 of 25 questions correctly (72%) would place above a person who answered 12 of 15 questions correctly (80%). This may seem a little strange, but then so are we. In the event of ties, the winner(s) will be determined by (a) answering playoff questions, (b) placing a piece of dry cat food on top of each finalist's printed e-mail address and then seeing which morsel Dan's cat Slasher selects first, or (c) using a random drawing.
6. LaxPower reserves the right to change the nature or number of prizes from what may be (or have been) posted on the site if unavoidable circumstances should occur (e.g., the resident dog develops a special fondness for LaxPower hats).
7. Installments of the quiz will generally be posted for about one week. The deadline for submitting each installment will be posted. Entries received after this date will be discarded, and no notification will be provided in such cases (because we've got enough to do without sending out bookclub-like notices saying that you returned your "reply card" too late).
8. You may talk with other people or look at a rule book in attempting to determine the answers to quiz questions. However, if you engage in such consultation, you must learn the answer and the reason for it rather than merely be told what the correct answer is. The point is that we'd like you to learn something. Fair enough?
9. It is not permitted to gain or attempt to gain access to the questions (by whatever means) for review prior to their posting nor to post or otherwise transit, by electronic or other means, the answers for a currently active installment of the quiz. Simply put, any action that might, in light of the spirit of these rules, constitute cheating is not allowed.
10. Contestants who, in the opinion of LaxPower, are violating any of the contest rules will be disqualified and will have silent aspersions cast upon their names.
11. Any contestant who wishes to dispute a quiz question, answer, or explanation or an interpretation of the rules by LaxPower should send a certified e-mail to Dick Clark and Ed McMahon, whose decision or opinion is not particularly relevant (but would certainly be interesting should you receive it).
12. Prizes will include some stuff that is yet to be determined. We'll have more information on this in the near future. The prizes won't be THAT terrific, so enter the contest in order to earn the greater glory of being the one who knows the most about lacrosse rules.
