We have produced conference power ratings for the six NCAA divisions before by calculating the average PR of each conference's teams. However, conference games were always included, which "muddied the waters." In the tables below, conference PRs were calculated by including only non-conference games (and games with other NCAA teams, which excluded a small number of contests). Although independents were included in the analysis, they are not shown in the tables. The analysis examined all scores on file from the beginning of the season through midday April 25. One important note: The top team for each conference is the one with the highest power rating based on the set of games analyzed, not overall.
One final note: Strength of schedule means a lot, so attempting to rate or rank conferences by winning percentage can produce deceptive results. For this set of data, the correlation between PRs and winning percentage is just .42 for the men and .64 for the women.
