WLax: Vermont Signs Four Recruits for 2005-2006

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont women’s lacrosse program has received commitments from four recruits.

Sarah DeStefano (Eliot, Maine), Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario), Jessie Peksa (Salisbury, Md.) and Tori Wasson (Lake Forest, Ill.) have all signed National Letters of Intent to continue their careers at UVM. First year head coach Jen Johnson made the announcement today. (read more)

UMBC's Zimmerman to Develop Sport in Argentina

St. Andrews Men's Lacrosse Early Signees

LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse coach Michael Lawson has announced that five student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play lacrosse and study at SAPC starting in the fall of 2005. Buckeyes Announce 2005 MLax Schedule

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Joe Breschi, Ohio State men's lacrosse head coach, announced the team's 2005 schedule Thursday. The two-time defending Great Western Lacrosse League champions will play host to seven games in Columbus, beginning with a game against 2004 national runner-up Navy Feb. 26. Pietramala Announces 2005 JHU Schedule

BALTIMORE, MD -- Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala announced the Blue Jays' 12-game schedule for the upcoming 2005 season today. The Blue Jays will once again play one of the most difficult schedules in the nation and will play seven of their 12 games at Homewood Field. Terps Men's Lacrosse Releases 2005 Schedule

Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dave Cottle has released the Terps' 2005 spring schedule. The Terps, who reached the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2004 and finished the season ranked No. 3 in the final UISLA Geico/STX coaches' poll, will once again play one of the most competitive schedules in the nation in 2005. (Erie, PA) Men’s Lacrosse Coach Chris Ryan announced Monday, November 29, that nine student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent and have committed to continuing their educations and playing careers at Mercyhurst College. 2004 Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Recap

HUNT VALLEY, Md. — The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inducted 10 new members on Saturday, November 20 at the Hunt Valley Marriott in Maryland. Nearly 500 people attended the Hall of Fame Induction Celebration, including 55 current Hall of Famers. Head men's lacrosse coach Ed Stephenson has finalized his 2005-2006 recruiting with the signing of six high school players to national letters of intent. Former Wellesley Player Named Rhodes Scholar

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Elizabeth "Betsy" Masiello, Wellesley College Class of 2003, has been named one of 32 Rhodes Scholars chosen from the U.S. this year. A computer science major and economics minor at Wellesley, Masiello is pursuing graduate studies in the Technology and Policy Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is the ninth Wellesley College student to win the prestigious honor since women were allowed to apply in 1976. (read more)

US Lacrosse Receives $4.5 Million Bequest

BALTIMORE -A. Norman Webb, Jr., a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, left a bequest to US Lacrosse estimated at $4.5 million-the largest gift ever received by the organization. Webb passed away on Sept. 2, 2004. (read more)

BALTIMORE, MD -- For the third time in five years and the fourth time since the NCAA went to predetermined sites, Johns Hopkins University has been selected to host the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse South Quarterfinal doubleheader. MLL Agreement with ESPN2, Other MLL/NLL News

Boston, MA (November 3, 2004) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, and ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, have agreed to a multi-year extension that will keep MLL “Game of the Week” telecasts on ESPN2 for the 2005 and 2006 seasons, MLL Commissioner David Gross announced today. 2004 Baggataway Cup Championship

Lennoxville, QC – The Brock University Badgers will be looking for a three-peat of the University National title this weekend at the 2004 Baggataway Cup, the emblem of supremacy in Canadian University Men’s Lacrosse, in Lennoxville.

Team Canada Wins Heritage Cup

Notre Dame Faces Three Final-4 Teams in Fall Ball

The University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team will conclude its fall workouts with exhibition games over the next week against three teams that reached the national semifinals of last year's NCAA Championship. The Irish will head to Anheiser-Busch Athletic Center in St. Louis, Mo., this weekend for Sunday's Fall Faceoff, in which they will first play Princeton in the morning (game not open to the public) and then Johns Hopkins at 1:30 p.m. (CDT). Notre Dame will then travel to Annapolis, Md., next Thursday, Oct. 14, to face 2004 NCAA runner-up Navy at 8 p.m. (EDT). (read more)

National Lacrosse League Sets 2005 Schedule

The National Lacrosse League has announced its 2005 regular season schedule. The regular season will begin on New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2005. The season kicks off on January 1 with a pair of games. The expansion Minnesota NLL team will travel to Rochester to face the Rochester Knighthawks at 7:35pm Eastern. Later that evening, the Colorado Mammoth host the 2004 Champion’s Cup winning Calgary Roughnecks in what has become the biggest rivalry of the West Division. Gametime is 7pm Moutain. (read more)

NLL Announces 2004 Entry Draft Information

The 2004 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft will take place on Tuesday, October 26th at 8pm Eastern Time. The Entry Draft will consist of six rounds. The league’s eleven teams will select a total of 66 players. The expansion Minnesota NLL team currently holds the top overall selection in the Entry Draft. Bucknell's Sid Jamieson to Retire After '05 Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sid Jamieson, the only head coach the Bucknell lacrosse program has ever known, announced today that he will step away from the sidelines following the 2005 season. Major League Lacrosse Rule Changes for 2005

Boston, MA (October 5, 2004) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced several rule changes for the 2005 season. The primary adjustment is the use of a 60-second shot clock beginning next year, replacing the 45-second shot clock that had been used for the league’s first four seasons. Siena Announces 2005 Men's Lacrosse Schedule

Head Coach Brian Brecht announced the 2005 men's lacrosse schedule which feature match-ups against two of last season's tournament teams, and 15 regular season games overall.

In his first season as head coach, Brecht will challenge the Saints in the Yale Fall Classic where 12 Division I men's lacrosse teams will compete in New Haven, Conn. on Oct. 17. The Bulldogs invited Denver, Harvard, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Massachusetts, Providence, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, Vermont and St. Johns to participate in the tournament. Siena will play Holy Cross at 11:30 a.m. and Quinnipiac at 1:45 p.m. Games will be played at Johnson Field and surrounding practice fields. (read more)

MLL Teams Announce 20-Man Protected Lists

Boston, MA (October 1, 2004) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced the 20-man protected lists submitted by each of its six teams. Each organization retains the rights to the players it protected, while all other players will become part of the League Player Pool. Ashley Harmeling, Amherst's All-American Woman

AMHERST, MA - Like any athlete training hard for the future, Amherst College senior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) spent the summer waking up well before sunrise. She's a three-sport athlete, and the rare recipient of honors in lacrosse, soccer and squash. Harmeling wasn't waking up early for any of these, though - she spent the summer in a high-paced internship with Goldman Sachs, working in the New York offices of their sales and trading division. Harmeling is an economics major with a high GPA and more experience under her belt than most college students can claim, regardless of the fact that most college students don't manage to balance lacrosse, squash and soccer on the side. Bayhawks Announce Postseason Roster Moves

Cannons Blow Past Bayhawks, Advance to Final

The Boston Cannons (8-4) have advanced to their first New Balance Major League Lacrosse Championship Game with a 24-16 victory over the Baltimore Bayhawks (7-5) in front of a raucous crowd of 6,888 at Boston University’s Nickerson Field. Barrage Edge Cannons, Make Playoffs for 1st Time

(August 14, 2004) Villanova, PA - The Boston Cannons (8-4) closed out the regular season Saturday night with a heartbreaking 18-17 loss to the surging Philadelphia Barrage (7-5) in front of 2,078 at Villanova Stadium. Rookie phenom Ryan Boyle closed out his spectacular regular season with a diving game-winning goal with 1:24 remaining in the game and two seconds left on the shot clock. Boyle finished the game with five goals and an assist and earned Bud Light MVP honors. Lizards Miss Playoffs After Loss to Rochester

The Rochester Rattlers (7-5) defeated the Long Island Lizards (6-6), 21-14, in front of 4,989 fans at Kearney Field on Saturday evening. The loss means the Lizards will not advance to the Major League Lacrosse playoffs for the first time in franchise history. High Drama on Tap for MLL Regular Season Finish

Boston, MA (August 12, 2004) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premiere professional outdoor lacrosse league, is preparing for a dramatic conclusion to its regular season on Saturday. Four teams enter Week Twelve with identical 6-5 records, but only three playoff spots remain, including one division title that remains up for grabs. The Boston Cannons, who clinched the American Division crown and the only postseason berth thus far, travel to Philadelphia to take on the Barrage, the league’s hottest team. Philadelphia has won four straight games and five of the last six; a win would guarantee the franchise’s first-ever playoff appearance. NLL Teams Declare Franchise Players for Season

Toronto Rock forward and 2004 League Most Valuable Player Jim Veltman, Colorado Mammoth forward Gary Gait and Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares are among the fourteen players who have been designated as “Franchise Players” by their respective clubs. The designation is made by clubs who wish to guarantee the retention of key veteran players who would have otherwise become Unrestricted Free Agents for the upcoming season. NLL Expands with Franchise in Minnesota

The National Lacrosse League has expanded to Minnesota. The league has formally announced the placement of its eleventh franchise at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The team is owned and operated by Minnesota Sports & Entertainment (MS&E), owners and operators of the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League and the Xcel Energy Center. The yet-to-be-named Minnesota team will join the league for the upcoming 2004-05 season, to begin in December of 2004. The team will play its eight regular season home games at the Xcel Energy Center. Cannons Win Their First in NJ, Clinch Division Title

(Montclair, New Jersey) July 31, 2004 – The Boston Cannons (8-2) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) did two things today against the New Jersey Pride (1-9) that they have never done in the team’s brief history. The Cannons won in the state of New Jersey for the first time and more importantly the Cannons clinched their first ever American Division title. Lizards Nip Rattlers, Win in Overtime Again

The Long Island Lizards (6-4) defeated the Rochester Rattlers (5-5), 14-13, in front of 2,982 fans at Mitchel Field on Friday evening. Jay Jalbert scored the game-winning goal 54 seconds into overtime, on an assist from Tim Goettelmann. Goettelmann scored the game-winning goal with only 11 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 13 apiece. BALTIMORE (July 23) — More than 300 women's lacrosse players from around the country have been honored on the 2004 US Lacrosse Women's Division High School All-America teams announced today.  A first team and honorable mention team were selected.  Players were selected by the High School Committee of the Women's Division Coaches Council.  Each of US Lacrosse's 50 chapter areas is awarded a designated number of All-America slots based on the number of head coaches that are US Lacrosse members in the chapter areas. Memorial Service for Doyle Smith on August 1

CHARLOTTESVILLE — A memorial service for E. Doyle Smith, Jr., is scheduled for August 1 at Alumni Hall at the University of Virginia. Smith, a member of the UVa athletics media relations office staff for 31 years before his retirement in 1999 and a long-time lacrosse publicist, died on June 1 at the age of 60. (read more)

MLL: Cannons Trade for Tierney; Other Deals

(Boston, MA – July 14, 2004) The Boston Cannons (6-1) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) acquired New Jersey All-Star Goaltender Trevor Tierney in a trade today. In exchange Boston gave New Jersey its first round pick in the 2005 MLL Collegiate Draft, the fourth round pick in the MLL Collegiate Draft which Boston received from Rochester in a trade for Brent Rothfuss earlier this season and the first round pick in the 2005 Supplemental Draft which Boston received from New Jersey in a trade earlier this season. US Lacrosse 2004 Boys' HS Academic All-Americans

BALTIMORE (July 13) - Over 70 of the nation's finest scholar-athletes for the sport of lacrosse have been named as US Lacrosse Men's Division High School Academic All-Americans.  The players were selected by the High School Committee of the US Lacrosse Men's Division Coaches Council.  The country is divided into 74 areas based on geography and league affiliations, and each area is awarded just one Academic All-America selection (a few select areas are awarded two spots based on the large number of teams in the area).  An area chairman coordinates the voting process within each area.  Requirements for the award vary by region and are determined by the areas themselves. WLax: USA Sweeps Canada in Test Match Series

Baldwinsville, NY - The Americans won eight of the first nine draws of the game, including two by Kellie Thompson, and scored the first 13 goals of the game while holding Canada scoreless for the first 28 minutes of the contest en route to a 16-4 victory in the final game of the three-match series. The USA defense allowed only eight shots, and Sarah Hughes had a pair of caused turnovers and two saves while Michele DeJuliis had five ground balls to lead the Stars and Stripes. Mercyhurst North East to Add Men's Lacrosse

Mercyhurst North East, a junior college in North East, Pennsylvania, located just outside of Erie, announces that they will add men’s lacrosse during the 2004-05 academic year. Mercyhurst North East is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Saints will compete in Region III, which is comprised of mostly New York colleges. Currently, Region III already has 14 schools that sponsor lacrosse. With the addition of lacrosse, Mercyhurst North East will now have 15 athletic programs. (read more)

Another 4th Qtr. Surge Leads Boston to 6th Win

(Boston, MA) July 10, 2004 – The Boston Cannons (6-1) of Major League Lacrosse beat the Philadelphia Barrage (2-5) 20-18 in front of 5,643 fans at Boston University’s Nickerson Field. The Cannons scored six times in the fourth quarter including two by Michael Watson to earn the win. WEST WINDSOR - It seems like even when things seem so right for the New Jersey Pride in 2004, someone individually puts the kibosh on the celebration.

The tables accessible at the links below contain three indicators of change.  Records can be deceiving, as teams sometimes have significant changes from year to year in their strength of schedule.  And comparing the computer power ratings can also be misleading, because they are scaled somewhat differently each year.  For these reasons, teams are ordered by the change in their power rating (PR) rank from 2003 to 2004. South Wins US Lax National HS Senior Showcase

The South defeated the North 9-8 in the championship game of the US Lacrosse National High School Senior Showcase, an event featuring 96 of the top high school boys' lacrosse players from around the country. The tournament, featuring four regional all-star teams, was held on June 26 at the Anheuser-Busch Sports Center in Fenton, Mo., and was sponsored by Lax World and STX. (read more)

Philadelphia Outscores Rochester 8-0 in Q4 for Win

(Villanova, PA- June 26, 2004) The Philadelphia Barrage, a Charter Member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), defeated the Rochester Rattlers, 19-15, tonight at Villanova Stadium in front of 2,074 fans. The Barrage recorded their first ever win against Rochester, while also picking up their first win on their new home field. Keith Cromwell earned himself the Bud Light MVP of the game, scoring a total 8 points (6g, 2a). Greg Cattrano had a spectacular night, as he registered 11 saves as well as becoming the first goalie in MLL history to score a goal. (read more)

Jerry Schmidt, Millbrook's Mike Fuller Pass Away

Austin F. "Jerry" Schmidt III, who has the highest winning percentage (.808, with seven straight appearances in a national championship game) in the 106-year history of Hobart lacrosse, died June 3 of complications related to diabetes. (read more)

National HS Ratings for Boys' and Girls' Lacrosse

The final 2004 high school national ratings for boys' and girls' lacrosse have been posted.  A pair of undefeated teams earned the top spots in the LaxPower CCR rating, a combination of the computer power rating and a poll by coaches.  Manhasset (NY) finished 20-0 and received the #1 overall rating among boys' teams, while Mt. Hebron (MD) finished 18-0 and received the #1 rating among girls' teams. (read more)

2004 National Hall of Fame Class Announced

BALTIMORE (June 23) - US Lacrosse has announced the selection of the 47th class for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The class includes a group of 10 individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport. The 2004 class will be honored Saturday, Nov. 20, at a formal induction ceremony at the Hunt Valley (Md.) Marriott. Their plaques will be located in the Lacrosse Museum and National Hall of Fame at the US Lacrosse headquarters in Baltimore. (read more)

Stan Ross Tabbed to Lead Butler Program

Stan Ross, who has served as Towson's top assistant and defensive coordinator for the past six seasons, has been named the third head coach in Butler lacrosse history, the university announced today. UVa's Amy Appelt Receives Honda Sports Award

Virginia's Amy Appelt, the ACC Player of the Year, has been named the Honda Sports Award recipient for lacrosse, as announced by the Board of Directors of the Collegiate Woman Sports Awards. Appelt, a consensus first team All-American who led the nation in scoring with 90 goals and 121 points, set ACC records this season for goals in a season, hat tricks in a season, and consecutive games scored. She is the first Virginia women's lacrosse player to earn this distinction and is now a candidate for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the Honda-Broderick Cup, the top award for collegiate women athletes. Roanoke, Springfield Name New WLax Coaches

SALEM, VA -- Roanoke College Director of Athletics Scott Allison announced the hiring of Mary Schwartz as the college’s new head coach of women’s lacrosse, taking effect July 1st. Schwartz will replace Tammy Dixon as the team’s head coach. Dixon left the school and the women’s lacrosse program after one season, citing personal reasons. In addition to serving as the head coach of women’s lacrosse, Schwartz will also be an assistant coach with the Roanoke field hockey program. (read more)

Robert Morris U. Announces Inaugural Recruits

Moon Township, Pa. - May 24, 2004 - The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team, under the direction of head coach Kenneth "Bear" Davis, announced the signing of 10 players to National Letters of Intent Monday. Syracuse Nips Georgetown to Reach Semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y. - - Senior midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) scored with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to give No. 4-seeded Syracuse (13-2) an 8-7 victory against Georgetown in the NCAA Division I men's lacrosse quarterfinals at Cornell's Schoellkopf Field. The win sends the Orange to the NCAA semifinals for the 22nd consecutive season. SU will take on the tournament's top seed, Johns Hopkins, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 29 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Virginia Cavaliers' women's lacrosse team raced out to a 5-1 halftime lead on the strength of eight saves by tournament MVP Andrea Pfeiffer and two goals and an assist from Tyler Leachman, and outscored the two-time defending national champion and previously undefeated Princeton Tigers (19-1) 5-3 in the second half to win the 2004 NCAA women's lacrosse title. Virginia's title, the first in women's lacrosse since Virginia defeated Princeton 8-6 in extra time in 1993, gave the Hoos a 10-game winning streak and made them two-for-two in championship games in 2004, adding the NCAA title to the ACC title. #1 Salisbury Holds off Washington to Gain Final

Salisbury, Md - The #1 ranked Sea Gulls broke a 7-7 halftime tie by
outscoring Washington 6-4 in the second half en route to a 13-11 victory in the national semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday. Salisbury (19-0) earns its seventh trip to the national championship game and will try to secure its second straight and fifth overall title against Nazareth in next Sunday's final in Baltimore. Middlebury Falls to Nazareth in Divi. III Semifinals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Nazareth (16-2) controlled the possession for much of the first three quarters as they were able to defeat Middlebury (16-2) 12-8 in an NCAA semifinal match-up. The Golden Flyers will take on Salisbury, a 13-11 winner over Washington College, in the NCAA Championship next Sunday at noon. The loss is the first for Middlebury in an NCAA semifinal, as their tournament record falls to 21-5. CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -- Eighth-seeded North Carolina was outscored by top-seeded Johns Hopkins 6-2 in the second quarter Saturday afternoon and the Blue Jays went on to beat the Tar Heels 15-9 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men¹s Lacrosse Tournament at Scott Stadium on the University of Virginia campus. #1 Princeton used a strong second half to down #11 Vanderbilt, 11-3, in the first semifinal in front of 3,215 fans at home. Theresa Sherry scored three goals to pace the undefeated Tigers (19-0), who started the second half with a 6-goal run after leading just 2-1 at the break. The win over the Commodores (12-6), who knocked off Loyola and James Madison on the way to the semifinals, sets up a rematch with Virginia in the championship game on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.. Middlebury Tops Stevens, Advances to Semifinals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury held an 11-1 halftime lead and never looked back as they picked up a 17-5 win over Stevens Institute in an NCAA quarterfinal game on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The Panthers will host Nazareth on Sunday in the NCAA semifinals with the time TBA. The win is the 45th straight for the Panthers on Youngman Field, a streak that dates back to April of ’97. Ticket Situation for the Men's Tournaments in Balt.

Over 31,000 all-session passes had been sold as of end of business on Tuesday. That is about 6,500 tickets ahead of last year's pace. Some anticipate a surge in ticket sales after the quarterfinals if past patterns hold, and a sell-out of the lower-level seats (another 7,500 tickets) seems fairly likely. ECAC Announces All-League Awards

Cape Cod, Mass. - Commissioner of the ECAC Phil Buttafuoco has announced the 2004 ECAC Lacrosse All-League squad. The team was selected by a vote of the league coaches. Georgetown’s senior midfielder Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md.) has been tabbed ECAC Riddell Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year. Hajj led the Hoyas with 23 goals scored this season while tallying 36 points. He tallied four game winning goals while leading his squad to an 11-3 overall record, an ECAC Championship and NCAA Championship berth. Rutgers’ sophomore goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, N.Y.) has been named ECAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. The sophomore goalie led the league in goals against average (6.96) and save percent (.646) while leading his squad to an 8-6 overall record and a berth into the NCAA Championship. (read more)

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the first time since 1989, Navy (13-2) will advance to the second round of the Div. The fourth-years on the Virginia women's lacrosse team walked the Lawn as part of their graduation exercises in the morning, and then put on a stellar performance in the NCAA quarterfinals as Virginia (17-3) advanced to the national semifinals with a 15-11 win over Northwestern (15-3) today in Charlottesville. Fourth-year Caitlin Banks led the Cavaliers with the opening goal of the game and four assists, while classmate Morgan Thalenberg had four draw controls, three caused turnovers, three goals and a pair of assists and fellow fourth-year Andrea Pfeiffer had 11 saves to lead the Cavalier defensive unit. COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Georgetown Hoyas used a dynamic offense and applied plenty of defensive pressure to defeat No. 3 Maryland, 14-10, and advance to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Final Four. The Hoyas got goals from nine different players and Coco Stanwick scored a hat trick to help lead Georgetown to its third final four in the last four seasons. WLax: Middlebury Wins Fifth NCAA Division III Title

The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team won its fifth (’97, ’99, ’01, ’02) NCAA Championship with a 13-11 overtime victory over the College of New Jersey at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The Panthers end the season at 19-0, a school-record for wins along with a fourth perfect season. Middlebury is now 70-1 over the past four seasons and 131-7 over the past eight. #3 Maryland Surges Past Army in NCAA 1st Round

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 3 Maryland Terrapins used nine fourth-quarter goals to erase, including six straight to open the last frame, to break open a close game and defeat Army, 16-12, Saturday night at Byrd Stadium. The Terps advance to face Princeton next Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. The time of that game will be announced at the beginning of the week. (read more)

#6 UNC Storms Past Ohio State in First Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sixth-ranked North Carolina went on an 10-1 scoring run over a span of 21:46 of the second half Saturday afternoon to storm past eighth-ranked Ohio State 13-6 in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship before 1,529 fans at Fetzer Field. It was Carolina's first NCAA Tournament win since May 22, 1993 and it improved the Tar Heels to 10-4 on the season. Ohio State saw its 2004 campaign end with a mark of 12-4. (read more)

NLL Average Attendance Surpassed 10,000 Mark

The National Lacrosse League season concludes the 2003-04 season with a final average attendance of 10,088. The average consists of all regular season games, All-Star Game and the Champion’s Cup Playoffs. A total of 867,626 fans attended NLL games this season. The season consisted of eighty regular season games, the All-Star Game and the Champion’s Cup Playoffs, which consisted of five games. The average represents an increase of 14% over last season’s average of 8,835 for the 2002-03 regular season and playoffs combined. (read more)

#5 Georgetown Hosts #11 Towson in 1st Round

Despite only 59 miles separating the institutions, Georgetown and Towson have not faced each other in a Division I lacrosse game since 1971. The two teams have scrimmaged each other during the past 33 years but the score has never counted as much as it will today. Towson enters the contest winning 11 of its last 12. Georgetown meanwhile has won five of its last six. Both teams won their respective conferences with Georgetown being crowned the 2004 ECAC Champion and Towson winning the 2004 CAA title. The overall series is only two deep with Towson winning both the 1970 and 1971 games. (read more)

#6 North Carolina Hosts #8 Ohio State in NCAAs

TAR HEELS EARN SPOT IN NCAA TOURNAMENT FIELD FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1998: The North Carolina Tar Heels (9-4) will make their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship since 1998 when the sixth-ranked Tar Heels play host to eighth-ranked Ohio State (12-3) in the first round of the 2004 tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus. PRINCETON, NJ (May 13)--The Princeton women's lacrosse team hadn't played a game for 12 days entering Thursday's NCAA first-round game with Colgate. But you couldn't tell that by the Tigers' performance throughout just about the entire 60 minutes.

Lindsey Biles led seven different Princeton scorers with five goals, moving within four of Princeton's all-time single-season goal-scoring mark, and the Tigers used three big goal-scoring runs to take control on the way to an 18-6 victory over the Raiders before 1,207 at Class of 1952 Stadium. Second-ranked Virginia cruised past the Mount, 19-2, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Charlottesville, Va., on Thursday afternoon. UNC Announces Men's Recruits for Class of 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.­­ The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse program announced its 11-member recruiting class Wednesday as announced by head coach John Haus and his staff. The group includes six players from New York, three from Maryland and two from North Carolina. The prospective student-athletes will enroll at Carolina in the fall of 2004 and join 33 returning lettermen in comprising the 2005 Tar Heel men's lacrosse team. (read more)

The sophomore tandem played a part in 10 Terrapin goals, leading No. 3 Maryland to a 13-5 pasting of No. 13 Pennsylvania in front of 2,570 at a sun-splashed Byrd Stadium. McGlone (Swarthmore, Pa.) had a career-high seven points and Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) notched his 11th hat trick of the season as the Terps pulled away after halftime to collect their fourth straight victory heading into the NCAA Tournament on a roll. The Calgary Roughnecks defeated the Buffalo Bandits, 14-11, in front of a sellout crowd of 19,209 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Friday night in the National Lacrosse League Champion's Cup Final. Curtis Palidwor was named Championship Game MVP with 41 saves. The Roughnecks used a balanced attack, with nine different goal scorers, including four defensemen. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's men's lacrosse team got back into the win column Wednesday night as the seventh-ranked Tar Heels defeated previously unbeaten Limestone 17-8 at Fetzer Field. Binghamton Tops Stony Brook in Overtime

VESTAL, N.Y.--The unbelievable ride that Binghamton (10-5) has been on this season refused to be beaten in Wednesday afternoon's America East semifinal game against Stony Brook (9-6). The Bearcats rallied from a three-goal deficit in the final six minutes of regulation and scored the game-winning goal with 2:36 remaining in the sudden-death overtime period to advance to the America East title game for the first time ever. When all was said and done, Binghamton had scored the game's last four goals in a span of just 7:24 to win for the fourth straight game and ninth time in the last 10 outings. (read more)

#2 Cortland Defeats Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) scored five goals and junior Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) added three goals and an assist as nationally second-ranked Cortland defeated Potsdam, 13-6, in the SUNYAC semifinals under the lights at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Cortland (14-1) will host Geneseo, a 13-7 semifinal winner at home over Oneonta, in the league championship game on Saturday. Old Westbury, NY - Senior Brian Boyle (Westbury, NY) recorded a game high five points and junior Paul Montali (New City, NY) added four goals as the #1 seeded NYIT Bears defeated #4 seeded Dowling College 18-11 in the semi-finals of the NYCAC lacrosse tournament. ATHENS, Ohio - There could not have been a more perfect ending for Ohio's two Canadian seniors Wednesday at Pruitt Field. Lynz Keys and Jennifer Cassidy, who both hail from Whitby, Ontario, spearheaded the offensive and defensive efforts, respectively, as the Bobcats defeated Ohio State, 7-4, in the season finale for both teams. Title IX Reaches 30

Title IX is controversial and more complex than many realize. To many it represents what was a long overdue effort to establish gender equity, while others view it as creating an unequal playing field . . . for men. The change began 30 years ago when, on June 23, President Nixon signed the Education Amendments of 1972 to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. One portion of that legislation was Title IX, which states that
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education programs or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
Numerous educational programs other than athletics have been affected by Title IX, but athletics are a primary focus. What does Title IX actually require? Has the law provided a more equal playing field for women wishing to pursue athletics? Have opportunities for men suffered as a result? How are institutions faring in coming into compliance with Title IX? (read more)
