Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Determines the direction and competition strategy. Directs overall recruitment process. Submits names of prospective student athletes to Yale's Admission's Office for consideration for admission. Decides best course of action for training and conditioning athletes. Determines composition of team and the placement of athletes on the team. Determines the mental and physical condition of athletes and changes training methods if warranted. Independently determines and shapes the strategy, technical aspects, and game preparation. Implements a sports program at a nationally recognized competitive level. Oversees such areas as recruitment, fund-raising, performance of athletes, contest management, and administrative details required to carry out contests. Teaches team concepts. Supervises and directs activities of assistant coaches and support personnel. Meets objectives and mission of a sports program within an academic environment and within University guidelines. Formulates and sets policies governing the strategies of play and conditioning of athletes and ensures such goals are met. Ensures a specific win-loss record is attained. Manages a budget. Develops and determines the recruitment program for and final selection of athletic talent to the University. Promotes a positive image in the New Haven community, at the University, for alumni, and on a national level.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and five years of experience with coaching a particular sport and experience in playing a particular sport or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional education and experience: Comprehensive knowledge of NCAA and Ivy League rules and regulations.
Skills and Abilities: (1) Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression. (2) Ability to motivate and lead a team. (3) Well developed sports management, analytical, and organizational skills. (4) Well developed counseling, negotiating, teaching, managerial, supervisory, and fund-raising skills.
