Old Dominion Rallies Late Then Downs #20 JMU in OT
HARRISONBURG, Va., April 12, 2009 -- Old Dominion senior Jessica noone (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) scored five goals, including the game-winner as time expired in the first overtime half, to lead the Monarchs to an 11-8 victory over 20th-ranked James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
ODU improved to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the CAA as the Monarchs moved into a four-way tie for first place in the league standings. Delaware, Hofstra and William and Mary also have 3-1 records in CAA play.
JMU's overall record now stands at 5-8, and the Dukes have a 1-3 record in league play.
The Dukes led by as many as four goals on two occasions, but ODU chipped away at the lead and scored the final three goals of regulation to force overtime.
JMU was up 8-5 after freshman Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) scored off a pass from senior Jaime Dardine (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) with 10:38 to play. Kimener's score followed a five-minute span in which three ODU shots were stopped by junior goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) and a fourth Monarch attempt hit the goalpost.
In the final 10 minutes of regulation each team had four scoring attempts. All four of JMU's shots were stopped by ODU redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sarah Geary (Springfield, Pa./Springfield).
ODU, meanwhile, converted three of its four attempts to tie the game at 8-8. noone netted an unassisted score at 8:30, and junior Ashley Kellogg (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) scored on a free-position shot with 6:56 remaining. The tying score came on a Kellogg goal off a pass from senior Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) with 4:38 on the clock.
JMU junior Susan Lines (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) controlled the ensuing draw, but a shot by sophomore Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) at 3:39 was saved by Geary. ODU gained possession and moved the ball into its end of the field, but an errant pass was intercepted by JMU freshman Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow). However, JMU's final scoring chance, a shot by Dardine with 20 seconds left, was thwarted by Geary.
In the first three-minute half of the six-minute overtime, JMU controlled the opening draw but Geary saved a shot by Lomady with 42 seconds remaining. ODU moved the ball downfield, and noone was fouled and awarded a free-position attempt with two seconds to go. She converted the shot to give the Monarchs a 9-8 lead.
In the second three-minute overtime half, the Dukes again controlled the draw but turned the ball over with 2:08 left. noone's goal off a pass from junior Saratu Dodo (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) pushed the ODU lead to 10-8, and Kimener netted the Monarchs' 11th goal on a pass from Kellogg as time ran out.
In addition to noone's five goals, Kellogg finished with three goals and an assist and Kimener added two goals and two assists.
JMU's Kimener led the Dukes' scoring with two goals. Lomady had a goal and two assists, and Dardine and sophomore Caitlin Sullivan (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) each had a goal and an assist.
JMU's Kelly finished with seven saves, while W&M's Geary made 10 saves.
