Gannon Hammered by Fourth-Ranked West Chester

CHESTER, Pa. - The Gannon women's lacrosse team dropped its second consecutive road match to a top-five team Wednesday afternoon with a 24-7 setback against fourth-ranked West Chester. The Lady Knights are ranked seventh in NCAA Division II.

West Chester opened the match with four consecutive goals, before Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) stopped the run with a goal at the 24:40 mark. The Rams quickly responded with six consecutive goals, increasing their advantage to 10-1 with 10:37 left in the first half.

Antonia Cianfrocco (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) found the back of the net with 9:51 remaining until halftime, but West Chester ended the half with five more goals and went to the intermission with a commanding 15-2 lead.

The second half was battled on more even terms. West Chester out-scored Gannon 9-5 in the final 30 minutes en route to a 24-7 victory.

Colleen Dixon (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) and Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) led the Gannon offense with three points each. Dixon had two goals and one assist while Nelson produced one goal and two assists. Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) added one of each.

Eshenour, Cianfrocco, and Christina Blasi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) completed the scoring with one goal each. Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) faced 53 shots, turning away 19 and allowing 24 goals. West Chester out-shot Gannon 53-13.

Gannon dropped to 6-3 while West Chester improved to 9-1. The Lady Knights return to action Monday, April 14 against Indiana (Pa.) at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
