Air Force Hands Bellarmine 13-8 Loss

USAFA, Colo. - Led by four goals and an assist from both junior Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior David Rose (Allentown, Pa.), the Air Force lacrosse team captured a 13-8 conference victory over Bellarmine Friday afternoon at Cadet Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons, currently undefeated at home, move to 3-5 on the season, 1-1 in the GWLL, while the Knights fall to 6-5, 0-3 in the conference.

Bellarmine held the first half advantage, and led 5-3 late in the second period before Nevitt tallied a pair of goals in a span of less than a minute and a half to knot the score at 5-5. However, the Knights' Shane Andersen closed out the half with his third goal of the game with just six seconds remaining on the clock.

Meanwhile, things turned around in the second half for the Falcons. Although Bellarmine scored first, Air Force rattled off four unanswered goals to take the lead. The final tally of the period came from senior Chris Tubesing (Centreville, Va.) on a two-man advantage for the Falcons, as the Knights were forced to serve a pair of non-releasable penalties. Air Force never trailed again, outscoring Bellarmine 3-1 in the final period, with two of its scores coming in the final 1:33.

In addition to Nevitt and Rose, the Falcons got strong play from freshman goalkeeper Woody Johnson (Davidsonville, Md.) and face-off specialist Reilly Smith (Sr., Scaggsville, Md.). Johnson recorded a season-high 18 saves on the afternoon, while Smith, up against one of the top face-off midfielders in the conference, won 13-of-22 face-offs on the day.

In addition to Nevitt and Rose's scores, Tubesing notched two goals for the Falcons, while senior Jack Parchman (Baltimore, Md.), junior long-stick midfielder Dan Gnazzo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshman Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.) all added Air Force scores.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team lost a key Great Western Lacrosse League match-up this afternoon at Air Force. Despite taking an early 3-1 lead and holding a 7-5 edge in the second half, the Knights ultimately fell to the Falcons 13-8 to remain winless in league play.

Bellarmine's (6-5, 0-3) Shane Andersen (Denver, Colo.) made the most of his return to his home state, leading the Knights in scoring with four goals and an assist. Senior midfielder John Kirk (Massepequa Park, N.Y.) also added a goal and an assist for the Knights.

Bellarmine got out of the gates quickly as Andersen tallied two scores in the first nine minutes of play. Senior Adam Gardner's (Toronto, Ontario) goal with just under four minutes left in the first period increased his squad's early lead to 3-1.

Air Force (3-5, 1-1) won the face-off to open the second period and scored on the ensuing possession, but Kirk delivered on a Bellarmine's second power-play opportunity of the game, putting his team up 4-2 midway through the term. The two teams would exchange goals again, before Falcon middie Griffin Nevitt, an All-GWLL first team pick a year ago, tied it up 5-5 with back-to-back goals coming with under three minutes left in the half.
