Bearcats Drop 11-5 Decision to Davidson

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team led, 3-2, at halftime, but Davidson scored nine goals in the second half to earn an 11-5 win on Friday (April 11) afternoon at Nippert Stadium.

Davidson tallied first just over one minute into the game. Becky Horton scored on a free position attempt at 1:03 mark to give the Wildcats the lead. UC scored the next two - one each by Shannon Lynes (Ellicott, MD/River Hill) and Lynsey Burton (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) - to earn its first lead.

Davidson tied it at two at the 13:48 mark on Haley Cook's tally. Marissa Hiatt (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) gave the Bearcats a 3-2 lead just before halftime on her second goal of the season.

Horton knotted the score 30 seconds into the second half with her second goal of the day. Burton scored her second on a feed from Steph Cox (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) to pit the Bearcats to a 4-3 advantage with 24 minutes to play.

It was the last lead UC would hold, however, as Horton and Emily Diefendorf combined for six goals down the stretch. The Wildcats scored six unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead.

Lindsey Marshall (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson) scored her team-leading 20th goal to cut the Davidson lead to 9-5, but a the Wildcats tacked on two late goals to produce the final margin.

Jen Mott (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) tallied a school-record 17 saves. UC will take on UC Davis on Saturday, April 12, at 2:00 p.m. in Nippert Stadium.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Davidson lacrosse team turned a one-goal deficit at halftime into an 11-5 win with nine goals in the second half against host Cincinnati and the Wildcats set a new single-season school record for wins with its 10th of the year on Friday afternoon at Nippert Stadium.

Davidson broke a tie with the 2006 squad for most wins in a single season by taking home the program's first victory against Cincinnati, who is in its first year of being a Division I varsity sport. The Bearcats fell to 2-10 on the year.

Junior Becky Horton led the second-half explosion with five goals on her way to setting a new personal-best with six goals for the game. Her six goals pushed her season total to 27, matching her career-high of a year ago.

The junior started the scoring for Davidson in the new half with a goal just 32 seconds into the half and then added another at the seven-minute mark to tie the score at 4-4.

Following Horton's goal, Davidson took control with five more goals to take a 9-4 lead and eventually the 11-5 win. Senior Emily Diefendorf and Horton combined for six goals down the stretch in assisting the Wildcats to their school-best 10th win.

Also scoring for the Wildcats with single goals each was senior Kate McDonald and the sophomore duo of Jen Crawford and Haley Cook.

Davidson dominated the stats by outshooting the Bearcats, 37-18, and picking up 41 groundballs as four different 'Cats had four or more, led by senior Anna Mitchell's six.

In addition the Wildcats were 5-of-10 on free position shots and earned a 12-7 advantage in draw controls.

Senior Laura Johnson played all 60 minutes in scoring the win between the pipes, while the Bearcats' Jen Mott registered 17 saves in the loss.

Davidson remains on the road with a trip to Ohio State on Sunday, Apr. 13 for its next contest with a 12:00 p.m. start time.
