Gandolfi Leads Hofstra Over Old Dominion

Hempstead, NY -- Sophomore midfielder Corrine Gandolfi tied her career-high and notched a new season-high with five points (three goals, two assists) and senior goalie Maisie Osteen stopped 11 shots in net as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team ended a two-game losing streak with a 11-7 victory over Old Dominion at James M. Shuart Stadium on Friday evening.

With the win Hofstra improves to 5-7 overall and evens its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) mark at 2-2 this season. Old Dominion lost for the fourth consecutive game and falls to 4-4 and 0-3 in conference action.

An entertaining first half saw the two teams combine for ten goals as Hofstra led 6-4 at the break courtesy of a pair of goals from Gandolfi, freshman attack Stephanie Rice and junior midfielder Lauren Whitcomb. Gandolfi, who closed the first half scoring with an unassisted tally at the six-second mark of the half, also contributed two assists in the opening thirty minutes. The score would be tied three times in the opening stanza as Ashley Kellogg's hat trick in the opening half helped keep the Lady Monarchs within shouting distance. Kellogg scored Old Dominion's final three goals of the half, including one off an assist from Kaelyn Shival with 18:19 left in the half that produced the final tie score of the half.

Hofstra would push its advantage to four goals as senior attack Kelly McGrath and sophomore midfielder K'Leigh Vanaman scored back-to-back goals within 19 seconds of each other in the opening seven minutes of the second half to allow the Pride to lead 8-4. The Vanaman goal would prove to be the game-winner as each team tallied four more goals in the contest. Kelly Kimener would score twice for the Lady Monarchs in the second half to account for her three goals in the game.

Kimener's free-position goal at the 19:46 mark cut the deficit to 8-5, but Hofstra scored three of the next four goals in the contest to put the game out of reach as they picked up their fifth win of the season.

Whitcomb finished with her fourth hat trick of the season for the Pride, who got team and game-highs of five ground balls and 11 saves from Osteen. Junior defender Alysse Ruszkowski and McGrath each had two caused turnovers for Hofstra, while Whitcomb, Vanaman and senior defender Kerrin Fraser led Hofstra with two draw controls apiece.

For Old Dominion, it was Kellogg's fourth hat trick of the season and Kimener's second. Kimener tied for team-lead in draw controls with four, tying her with teammate Jordan McKeon. McKeon also led the way with four ground balls, while Erica Erb and Saratu Dodo each notched three caused turnovers. Sara Larson made five saves in net for the Lady Monarchs.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when they host #18 William & Mary at 12:00 p.m. The game will be the final home regular season contest for the Pride's four seniors, who will be honored before the game in a short ceremony.
