Fontbonne Downs Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. Junior attacker Patrick Zeis (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) had a hand in nine of Fontbonne's goals as the Griffins earned a 13-11 men's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at at Alexandre Stadium.

Zeis scored six goals and added three assists to help Fontbonne improve to 6-7 on the season. The Presidents' record dropped to 3-7.

W&J claimed a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the contest when sophomore midfielder Jackson Doyle (Northville, Mich./Northville) scored off a long pass from freshman goalie Quinton Thorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston).

The Griffins fought back with two goals to claim a 2-1 edge after 15 minutes of play, but goals by juniors Zach Devilbiss (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Chris Vogel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) put W&J back in front, 3-2, at the 11:01 mark.

Fontbonne rallied with three consecutive goals to assume a 5-3 halftime lead. The teams traded three goals a piece in the third quarter and Zeis' score 51 seconds into the fourth quarter upped the Griffin lead to 9-6. Freshman midfielder Elliot Bender (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made it a 10-6 game with a goal at the 12:46 mark.

Washington & Jefferson scored three of the next four goals and closed to within 12-10 with 7:16 left after a goal by Vogel. The Presidents would not get any closer though and Fontbonne escaped with the road win.

Zeis attempted 17 of Fontbonne's 42 shots. The Presidents attempted 34 shots and held a 43-35 ground ball edge. W&J also converted on 4-of-8 extra-man chances.

Sophomore attacker Kendall Eckles (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) added three goals and one assist for the Griffins, while Bender dropped in a pair of goals. Sophomore Austin Doster (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills) collected the victory in goal after making five saves.

Vogel led the W&J offense with four goals and two assists. Devilbiss and Doyle both added three scores, while senior attacker Tim Huckestein (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) rounded out the W&J goal scorers with one. Huckestein also assisted on a pair of goals. Thorne stopped 11 shots in the loss.

Washington & Jefferson looks to snap its five-game losing streak on Wednesday when hosting Wooster for a 7:00 pm contest at Alexandre Stadium.
