17th-Ranked Colby Holds on to Down Wesleyan
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) had a collegiate-high eight points and teammate Amy Campbell (North Andover, Mass.) added a collegiate-high five goals as the 17th-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team held on for a 14-12 win over Wesleyan University in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Colby moves to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the NESCAC, while Wesleyan falls to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Cardinals will play at Bowdoin College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Mules' next game also is against Bowdoin this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Colby's Bill Alfond Field.
Julian, a junior, also had a collegiate-high four assists to go along with four goals. Campbell's five goals also was her best collegiate point total. Campbell had five goals last year in her first year with Colby, but has 24 goals and three assists for 27 points in 11 games this year.
The Mules took a 14-9 lead when Julian tallied with 2:08 left in the game, but Wesleyan rallied with three straight goals and cut the margin to 14-12 with 29.5 seconds left. The Cardinals did win the draw control, but were unable to cut the lead to one goal. Colby scored the final four goals of the opening half to take a 7-3 lead at the break. Julian had a pair of goals and an assist during the scoring run.
After Wesleyan scored two straight goals to open the half to cut the lead to 7-5, Julian had assists on three straight goals to push the lead up to 10-5. The Cardinals had four goals in the final 12:28 on free position attempts to close the gap.
Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.) added two goals and one assist for the Mules. Colby All-American Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) added one goal and one assist.
Sarah Orkin (West Hartford, Conn.) had four goals on five shots for Wesleyan. Allie Lynch (Greenwich, Conn.) finished with three goals and one assist, Erin McCarthy (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored twice, while Charlotte Hastings (Hartland, Vt.) and Sophia Kim (Annapolis, Md.) both had one goal and one assist.
Rachel Stemerman (Williamsville, N.Y.) had 13 saves in goal for the Cardinals. Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, Conn.) had four stops for Colby.
