Red Dragons Fall to Blue Devils

Sophomore Katie Monaghan (Fairport/Fairport) scored two goals and added three assists to lead the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils to a SUNYAC win against Oneonta State today in women's lacrosse action. The win for Fredonia raises its overall record to 6-3 while Oneonta falls to 7-5 overall.

Fredonia created its advantage in the first half when they broke a three all tie with eight unanswered goals to take a commanding 11-3 lead at halftime. Senior Leslie Von Pless (Liverpool/Liverpool) scored three straight goals in the middle of the run to help fuel the attack.

Oneonta scored the game's first goal just 1:01 into the contest when freshman Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) scored unassisted.

The Blue Devils bounced back with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead at the 5:21 mark. Freshman Alyssa Przydrozny (Marcellus/Marcellus) had a goal and an assist.

The Red Dragons scored a pair to even the score back at three apiece.

Sophomore Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff/North Shore) and junior Brianne Ruzek (Mineola/St. Mary) each scored as both goals were assisted by senior Michelle Arket (Scotia/Scotia Glenville). Portnoy finished the game as Oneonta's offensive leader with four goals and one assist.

Fredonia opened the second half with a goal to make the score 12-3 before Oneonta made a push scoring the game's final five goals for the final of 12-8.

Senior Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) made 11 saves in goal for Fredonia while her counterpart, Eileen O'Toole (Long Beach/Long Beach) made eight saves.

Oneonta will be at Geneseo this coming Tuesday for another SUNYAC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
