Cortland Edges Brockport in Overtime
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior Rachell Cornwell (Fairport) scored four goals, including the only two in overtime, and sophomore Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) recorded four goals and two assists to lead the Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 16-14 overtime win at Brockport in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the win, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-3 and 2-2.
Junior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) netted three goals for the Red Dragons, sophomore Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) had two goals and an assist and senior Jen Pacifico (Sachem) added two goals. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/G.Ray Bodley) made 10 saves, including a stop on a free-position shot in the second three-minute overtime period to keep Cortland's lead at two.
Lexie Goodhart led the Golden Eagles with two goals and four assists. Kim Winslow added two goals and two assists, Jenny Baccile and Julia Decker each recorded two goals and an assist and Melissa Hill scored a pair of goals. Goalie Jamie Kaminsky made 10 saves.
The teams were tied, 7-7, at intermission but Brockport slowly built three-goal lead and led 12-9 with 14 minutes, 37 seconds remaining. Cortland cut the lead to 12-11, but Brockport scored two of the next three goals for a 14-12 lead with 9:21 left. Cornwell scored her second of the game to pull the Red Dragons to within one goal, and Torre notched her third of the game from the free position with just 1:40 remaining to send the game to extra time.
Cornwell gave Cortland its first lead since late in the first half with a free-position goal just 36 seconds into the first of two three- minute overtime sessions, then added an insurance goal with 19 seconds remaining in the opening three minutes. Brockport had the only two shots of the second three-minute stanza with Abell turning back a free-position attempt to protect the lead, and Cortland held on the for 16-14 win.
