Binghamton Holds off Vermont for Victory
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Binghamton held off a second half rally by Vermont to earn a hard-fought 6-5 victory in America East action on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field. The Catamounts trailed 5-1 at halftime but freshman Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md.) scored a man-up goal with 3:55 remaining to cut the deficit to one. However, Vermont couldn't notch the equalizer despite out shooting Binghamton 10-3 in the fourth quarter. Vermont dropped to 4-9 (1-2 AE) with the loss while the Bearcats improved to 3-6 (1-2 AE).
The loss was the first at Moulton Winder Field for Vermont since April 14 last season in a 14-7 defeat against No. 2 Albany. UVM had won three straight in Burlington.
Freshman Kyle Hann (Potomac, Md.) and junior Alex Young (Cincinnati, Ohio) each had a goal and an assist for the Catamounts. Junior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y.) added a goal and senior Andrew Goldfarb (Kotonah, N.Y.) recorded the first goal of his career.
Junior Duncan Streeten had a goal and an assist for the Bearcats.
Binghamton out shot Vermont 23-4 in the first half and took a 5-1 lead to intermission.
Vermont answered with three goals in a span of 2:11 early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Goldfarb started the come back effort with a goal in transition. Then Hann setup Young for an easy goal in front before adding a goal of his own with 10:52 left in the quarter.
Binghamton junior Kevin Joy responded with what proved to be the game-winning goal with 6:42 remaining in the third.
Vermont put the pressure on Binghamton's defense in the final quarter and Lichtfuss notched his team-high 18th goal of the year on an assist from Young with 3:55 left.
Senior Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J.) made 10 saves and senior co-captain Aaron Shore (Ithaca, N.Y.) had four ground balls for Vermont. Freshman Chris Hall (Niskayuna, N.Y.) went 6-for-10 on face offs.
Vermont returns to action next Sunday at Albany at 1:00 pm.
