Second-Period Goals Boost Saint Michael's Over Bentley

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Six second-period goals propelled Saint Michael's to a 9-7 win over Bentley in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Duffy Field. Seniors Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass.) and Greg Lazarus (Evanston, Ill.) each tallied four points with hat tricks for the Purple Knights, who improved to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Falcons' overall mark also went to 5-5 with a 3-4 NE-10 record.

Bentley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to early tallies from sophomore Stephen Moulton (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) and junior Andy Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS), who scored two in the game to lead the Falcons.

Boerma scored all three of his goals as part of the six netted by Saint Michael's in the second to take a lead it would never relinquish after being shut out for the opening stanza. Five straight from the Purple Knights made it a 6-3 halftime lead.

The two sides traded goals in the third quarter, with a strike from Lazarus answered by a goal from junior Chris Woods (Duxbury, Mass./Sandwich HS). After Lazarus scored one more early in the fourth to put Saint Michael's up by four, Bentley attempted a comeback with goals from sophomores Kevin Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and Wyatt Couture (South Hadley, Mass./Avon Old Farms) and a score by senior Dan Scavone (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) that brought the Falcons within one with 3:07 to go.

That was all the Falcons could get past the Purple Knights' senior goalkeeper Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass.), who made 12 saves as Bentley outshot Saint Michael's, 39-28, in the contest. Junior Jake Previte (Cohasset, Mass.) netted a goal at the buzzer to punctuate the victory for the Purple Knights. Junior Kris Dambach (Chester, N.J./West Morris Central HS) made nine saves in the other crease for the Falcons.

The Falcons are back in action on Saturday, April 19, traveling to Springfield, Mass., to take on American International at 1:00 p.m. The team's final home game of the regular season is on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. against Le Moyne.
