No. 9 Amherst Rebounds with Road Win at Williams
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The 9th-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team rebounded from its only loss of the season this afternoon with a 14-6 road win at NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College. Amherst took the 2008 Little Three title with the win, and improves to 9-1 overall (5-1 NESCAC).
Williams was paced by Alice Nelson and junior Julia Nawrocki with two goals apiece, while Amherst was led by juniors Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) and Amy Craig (Denver, CO), sophomore Christina Hopkins (Montclair, NJ), and first-year Robyn Lightner (Mountain Lakes, NJ) who netted two each for the Lord Jeffs.
Amherst came out strong, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the contest. The Ephs first goal came unassisted from junior Britt Spackman at 21:05 to make the sore 2-1. Amherst responded, netting a goal 5 minutes later. Junior Julia Nawrocki scored the Ephs second goal off a free position shot at 9:32. The Lord Jeffs' offence put pressure on the Ephs in the last ten minutes of the half, scoring 5 more goals to gain an 8-2 advantage.
Amherst scored two goals to start the second half, before Ephs sophomore Alice Nelson netted a goal off a pass from classmate Tina Nawrocki at 22:36. Nelson scored her second goal off a free position shot ten minutes later, but not before Amherst had scored three more unassisted goals. Tina Nawrocki scored off a pass from senior Sarah du Pont at 10:15 to close out the Ephs scoring. The Lord Jeffs sealed the victory with two more goals in the last ten minutes of play to bring the final score to 14-6.
Williams out shot the Lord Jeffs, 27-25, but Amherst keeper Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY) made a season-high 15 saves for the Lord Jeffs. Ephs goalie, first-year Julia Schreiber made 5 saves.
Amherst kicks off a three-game home stand this Thursday evening when they host Wheaton College for a 7:00 p.m. game.
