Big First Half Leads Denison Past Allegheny
After Allegheny took the opening draw for a quick score the Big Red would respond with seven unanswered goals that spanned just eight minutes. That six-goal pad would be enough for Denison as they would withstand a Gator comeback attempt and hang on for the 14-11 victory on Sunday at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison's offense was clicking and they Big Red did an outstanding job of winning draws and that would be the difference in the contest. Allegheny scored five of the game's final seven goals and cut the lead to two at 13-11 with 1:33 to play. After Allegheny's final goal which was scored by Laura Hoch, Denison's Quinn Simmons (Medina, Ohio/Medina) won her game-high ninth draw of the day and the Big Red proceeded to spread the field. After some nifty passing Simmmons would find Meg Wilcox (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) wide-open, in front of the goal to ice the game with 28 seconds left.
Simmons led Denison with five goals off just five shots. She also added two assists and posted a season-high nine draw controls. Sophomore Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) scored one goal and had three assists. Freshman Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School) finished with two goals and one assist. Also adding two assists was freshman Kelly Vogt (Gates Mills, Ohio/Hawken School).
Denison and Allegheny both attempted 28 shots. The Gators led 17-10 in ground balls but DU held a 19-8 advantage in draws. Junior goalie Amanda Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) posted eight saves for the Big Red. Leslie Stange contributed seven saves for Allegheny.
The win moves Denison's record to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Allegheny falls to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC. DU will travel to Wooster on Saturday (April 19) and will take on Sewanee in Granville on Sunday (April 20).
