Quinnipiac Downs Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Quinnipiac upended Mount St. Mary's in the home finale at Waldron Family Stadium 12-4 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on Sunday.

Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) paced the Mount (8-7, 4-2 NEC) with two goals while Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) and Rebecca Douglass (White Hall, Md./Towson Catholic) each found the twine in the loss.

Tiffany Manzi fueled the Bobcats (9-4, 7-1 NEC) with four markers, and Kelly Bruneau added two goals and two assists. Hanna Nelson turned away nine shots in the winning effort.

Coming off its 10-9 win against Sacred Heart on Friday, Quinnipiac started strong and never looked back to complete a 7-1 league record and at least share of the NEC regular season title with the victory.

After the match was tied at 1, the Bobcats rolled off six of the next seven goals to grab a 7-2 lead going into halftime.

Bruneau started a three-goal run on an 8-meter goal at 3:33 to hand Quinnipiac the lead it would not relinquish at 2-1. Ashley Valentine scored unassisted at 8:42 before Manzi converted a free-position shot of her own at 11:33 for a 4-1 advantage.

Rossetti momentarily halted the Bobcats run on an 8-meter goal at 18:50 to trim the margin to 4-2, but Quinnipiac scored three unanswered tallies to end the stanza.

Janelle Lopez found the twine unassisted at 20:30 before Bruneau registered consecutive helpers to Katy Delagi at 22:02 and Manzi at 23:46 for a five-goal advantage going into the break.

The Mountaineers scored the first two markers of the second half to cut the margin to 7-4. Rossetti scored unassisted at 31:06 and Douglass followed with her final goal in Emmitsburg at 35:38.

The Bobcats responded by scoring the final five markers of the match to cap a 12-4 victory. Manzi and Jennifer Skipper posted two goals, and Lyndsey Banach also scored in the surge.

Bruneau started the match by scoring off a free-position attempt at 1:25 before Johnson tied the game at 1 on an 8-meter goal at 3:06. Quinnipiac then scored 11 of the final 14 goals to hand Mount St. Mary's its first home NEC loss since the Bobcats defeated the Mount 13-12 in overtime on Mar. 31, 2006 and end an nine-game home conference winning streak.

Jane Karger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) recorded seven saves in the loss. Junior Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had her string of 31-straight games with a goal snapped. The junior sits at 55 markers on the season, one shy of Jen Stocker's (56, 1997) single-season program record.

It also marked the first time the Mount lost a league game by more than one goal since the squad lost 13-10 to Monmouth on Apr. 6, 2003. The Mount was 34-6 in league games since that loss to the Hawks with all six losses of the one-goal variety.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at Long Island. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
