Marlins Spear Shenandoah
NORFOLK, Va. - Host Virginia Wesleyan dominated the first 30 minutes of play Sunday afternoon in an 18-3 non-league women's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah.
VWC (11-4) scored the first 16 goals of the game, including all 14 of the first half goals, to coast to the win over the Hornets (1-10).
The Marlins outshot Shenandoah 36-9 for the game and held a 28-3 advantage on in the first half. VWC also won 45 of the contest's 68 groundballs and held a 18-5 advantage in draw controls.
Freshman Jessie Kuykendall broke a nearly 40 minute scoreless string for SU with her free position goal with 20:30 remaining. Classmate Ashley Heroth scored another free position goal just over four minutes later, but the hosts ended this run with a goal at 7:21.
Kuykendall closed the book on the Hornets scoring with her conversion of a Sara Mucciaro feed with 5:40 left.
Tara Harding led a group of 12 Virginia Wesleyan women in the scoring column with four goals while Jillian Boyd and Jordan Venetis both had two goals and two assists.
Virginia Thomas made nine saves in the losing effort.
Shenandoah begins USA South Conference Tournament play on Tuesday at 4:00 at fourth-seeded Ferrum.
