Notre Dame de Namur Walks by Whittier
April 13 – The Notre Dame de Namur lacrosse team avenged their only defeat of the season with an 18-10 rout of Whittier College. The Argos used a 13-3 advantage over the second and third periods to never trail and topple the Poets.
The game started perfectly for NDNU as Cam Foss and Ryan Hulsey each scored in the first three minutes to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Whittier responded and knotted the game at 2-2 with just under a minute left in the first.
The Argos opened the second with a goal to go ahead before the Poets once again tied the score. Senior Tim Campeau put NDNU up for good with three goals in a span of one minute and 35 seconds. After a Whittier goal cut the margin to two, the Argos scored the games next nine goals to take a 14-5 advantage in the closing minutes of the third. The Poets would score six of the games final nine goals, but it was too little too late.
NDNU won 21 of 30 face-offs and held a 31-24 advantage on groundballs. The Poets outshot the Argos 34-31 and scored on two extra-man opportunities.
Twelve of the Argonauts 18 goals were scored by the seniors playing in their final home game. Leading scorer Brad Matzek pulled within one goal of the single season school record with a four goal, two assist performance. Matzek's 38 goals put him just one behind Marc Mackrides school record of 29 goals in a season.
Campeau also scored four goals and recorded two assists, while Jesse Painter tacked on two goals. Foss and Jon Black each netted one goal with Foss adding two assists. Owen Williams and Conrad Clevlen also registered a pair of goal each. Clevlen won 14 of 20 face-offs and picked up a game high seven groundballs.
Whitter was led by Chuck Wagner, Anthony Lackey and Kevin McCarroll who all recorded a hat trick. Christian Wright scored the other Poet goal while Alex Chaudry picked up three assists.
Matthew Coric was once again outstanding in net for the Argos, registering 13 saves and picking up his eighth victory of the season.
The Argos improved to 9-1 on the season and close out the year with a three game road trip that features Mercyhurst, Wheeling Jesuit and Seton Hill.
