Gallagher Has 8 Points as Cortland Clobbers Morrisville
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Meghan Gallagher (Long Beach) scored a career- best eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists and senior Beth Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) set new career highs with four goals, three assists and seven points to lead the Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 20-3 win versus Morrisville St. in SUNYAC action Tuesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons won their fourth straight and improved to 7-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Mustangs fell to 3-7 and 0-5.
Sophomore Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) contributed four goals and an assist, senior Rachel Cornwell (Fairport) had three goals and three assists and senior Elizabeth Acee (Syracuse/ Henninger) added three goals and an assist for the Red Dragons. Freshman Bri Shost (Mahopac) scored twice and freshmen Beth Cutia (Cortland) and Emily Soderquist (Watertown) each had a goal. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) made two saves and allowed one goal in 41 minutes, 18 seconds of action before giving way to sophomore Sarah Farrell (Syracuse/Henninger), who stopped three shots and surrendered two goals in 18:42.
Junior Jennifer Caffarelli (Phillipsburg, NJ) netted all three of Morrisville St.'s goals to give her a team-high 28 on the season. Freshman Sybill Stanton (Walton) recorded four caused turnovers, four ground balls and four draw controls for the Mustangs. Sophomore goalie Stephanie Smith (West Winfield/Mt. Markham) registered six saves.
Cortland opened up an 8-0 lead 15 minutes into the game before Caffarelli netted her first of the contest. The Red Dragons, however, closed the first half with the final four goals and led 12-1 at the intermission. Cortland stretched the lead to 18-1 late in the second half and the teams traded the last four goals for the final of 20-3.
The Red Dragons outshot the Mustangs, 31-10, had a 21-12 advantage in ground balls and won 15-of-24 draw controls with Cornwell securing a game-high six.
