No. 1 C.W. Post Cages the Golden Lions
Brookhaven, NY -- Jenna Miller had 7 points (4G, 3A) to lead all scorers as the #1 C.W. Post Pioneers defeated Dowling 15-7 at Golden Lions Field. The win improves the Pioneers flawless record to 12-0 (4-0 ECC) as Dowling drops to 6-4 (2-2 ECC).
Possession belonged to Dowling for much of the first half, as the Golden Lions were able to strike first on a Lauren Marra (New Hyde Park, NY) goal 2:28 into the game. Dowling would push their lead to 2-0 1:33 later on an unassisted tally from Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, NY). C.W. Posts lightning quick offense would answer back with a 3-0 run, as three different Pioneers found the back of the net.
Dowling would tie the game at 3-3 on a Kelly Cefalu (East Islip, NY) free position shot, and regain their two goal advantage on goals from Vanessa Moreira (Selden, NY) and Cronins second of the game. The Pioneers would once again have an answer, this time Mallory Poole would score twice, the last coming off a feed from Miller from behind the cage to tie the game at 5 going into the half.
Cefalu would net the first goal of the second half to give Dowling a 6-5 advantage but the C.W. Post offensive would prove to be too much for the Golden Lions. Miller would ignite a 10-1 second half Pioneers run to end the game and secure the victory for the #1 team in the nation. Poole finished with 4 goals and Samantha Lyons had 3 for the visitors. Cronin led Dowling with 3 points (2G, 1A) and Moreira finished with 2 goals and a game high 10 ground balls.
Dowling returns to action Saturday hosting Regis. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
