Wesleyan Falls to No. 12 Trinity (CT)
Ranked 12th in the latest IWLCA national Division III poll, Trinity College (7-4, 5-2) defeated homestanding Wesleyan (5-7, 2-5) by an 11-6 score. The Bantams never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after 17 minutes of play, with both freshman Caitlin Irvine and senior C.J. Yanofsky scoring two of their game-high four goals each to pace the Trinity attack.
Wesleyan got as close as three goals at 7-4 and the half ended with Trinity ahead, 8-5. The lead stayed at least three goals in the second period with the Bantams netting the final two goals after the second goal of the game by Wesleyan sophomore Erin McCarthy narrowed the gap to 9-6. Freshman Rachel Romanowsky picked up her first goal of the game and 31st of the season for Trinity at 16:07 to complement her three assists, joining Irvine, now with 25 goals on the year, and Yanofsky, with 34 goals, with a four-point game.
Wesleyan also got two goals from senior Sophia Kim. In the Trinity goal, senior Michelle Smith made nine stops. Wesleyan junior Rachel Stemerman collected five saves in her 30 minutes of work during the first half. Sophomore Abby Sedney made four saves in the second half while Wesleyan also recorded one team stop.
Trinity clinched a NESCAC playoff spot with the victory while Wesleyan's qualification will likely come down to its final regular-season game vs. Bates. Trinity hosts Williams in its next game Saturday while Wesleyan travels to NESCAC leader Middlebury.
