Royals Tie School-Record by Downing Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa.-The University of Scranton defeated Moravian College, 12-9, Wednesday afternoon in Landmark Conference. In the process, the Royals tied a record that stood since 1999.

Freshman attacker Stephen Bruestle (Holland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored a game-high four goals, including three in the second-half, and assisted on another as the Royals won their fourth straight game to improve to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Scranton, which tied the school-record for most wins previously set by the 1999 team under then head coach Warren Breig, also received two goals apiece from freshmen Kyle Frank (Glen Arm, Md./Boys' Latin) and Christian Dugan (Avon, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and sophomore Doug Homan (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan).

Trailing 3-2 after the first period, the Royals took command in the second as Homan scored two and Frank and Dugan one each to scratch out a 6-3 lead by intermission. Freshman JP Barton (North Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) opened the third period with a goal off an assist by junior midfielder Thomas Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) and Bruestle and Frank followed with goals during a 35-second span as Scranton opened up a 9-4 lead. Tosches answered with a pair of goals during a four-minute span to cut the lead to three, 9-6, before Bruestle ended the period with a goal off of feed from Frank to give the Royals a four-goal lead entering the final 15 minutes of play.

The Royals scored twice within the first four minutes of the fourth period to extend their lead to 12-7. The Greyhounds scored on an extra-man opportunity with six minutes left and tallied another goal with two minutes remaining to set the final score. Once again, freshman midfielder Patrick Cefalu (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) played a major role in keeping Scranton on offense. He won 18 of 25 face-offs and finished with 10 ground balls. For the season, he is winning 66 percent of his face-off attempts (167 of 253).
