Gendron, Goddard Power Bentley Over SCSU
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors Beth Gendron (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) and Liz Goddard (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough HS) paced the Bentley offense to a 20-11 win over Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Dow Field. Gendron netted five goals and Goddard tallied seven points for the Falcons, who improved to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Owls fell to 2-10 overall and 2-5 in the NE-10.
Bentley did most of its damage in the first half, erupting for 14 goals before the break. After the teams opened by trading goals to make it 2-2, the Falcons outscored Southern Conn by a 12-3 margin for the rest of the first half. Junior All-America Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover, Mass./North Andover HS) scored all four of her goals in the first half and sophomore Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) also completed a hat trick before halftime. Gendron put the Falcons in the lead for good five minutes into the contest and Griffin netted the eventual game-winner with five minutes to go before halftime.
The Owls put forth their best effort in the second half, scoring six goals to match the Falcons. Gendron scored three times after the break for Bentley and junior Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs HS) notched a pair of goals back-to-back. The Owls put together a string of four straight goals midway through the half, including a pair from senior Allison Kownacki (Orange, Conn.), who led Southern Conn with five in the contest, but the Owls' deficit was too much to overcome.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christina Guglielmo (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS) made 11 saves to earn the win for the Falcons, while sophomore Lisa Corso (North Bellmore, N.Y.) stopped six shots at the other end for Southern Connecticut State.
Goddard scored two goals and added five assists to lead the Falcons with seven points as Bentley outshot Southern Connecticut State, 30-28, in the contest.
The Falcons return home to host Molloy in a non-conference tilt on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
