Saint Leo Upsets #9 Wingate in DSC Tourney in 2OT

Mars Hill, N.C. (April 18, 2008) Kyle Marceau (So., Concord, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:52 remaining in double-overtime to lift the Saint Leo University lacrosse team (8-7) to an 8-7 upset win over No. 9 ranked Wingate University (11-3) in the Deep South Conference tournament semifinals.

In an over and back contest, Wingate forced overtime by erasing a late two-goal deficit. The Bulldogs scored twice in an 18-second span with under two minutes left in regulation to send the game into OT. Neither team could find the net in the first overtime and with time winding down in the second extra period Marceau netted the winner on an assist from DSC Freshman of the Year Gregg Geiss (Syracuse, N.Y.).

The Lions will face the winner of the Catawba-Mars Hill game on Sunday in the Deep South Conference Tournament Final at 2:00 p.m. Catawba and Mars Hill will face each other tonight at 8:00 p.m. The 2008 DSC Tournament is being hosted by Mars Hill.

Marceau finished the game with two goals, while Ryan Pomponio (Jr., Garden City, N.Y.) scored three goals and added an assist in the win. Geiss and Benjamin Brigham (Jr., Scituate, Mass.) finished with two assists apiece. Saint Leo goalkeeper DJ Garry (So., Greenwood, Ind.) made 11 saves in net for the victory.

Pomponio scored twice in the first quarter to take an early 2-0 lead. Wingate returned the favor in the second quarter, as the Bulldogs scored three straight goals to carry a 3-2 lead into half-time.

Marceau tied the game early in the third quarter with a man-down goal, but Wingate regained the advantage with 6:54 left in the third. Andrew Sousa (Sr., Scituate, Mass.) again evened the score with 4:14 left to make it 4-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Wingate led 5-4 early in the fourth, but Saint Leo scored three unanswered goals to open up a two-goal lead with Pomponio capping off the run to give the Lions a 7-5 lead with 2:19 left in regulation. The Bulldogs got the two late tallies to force the overtime.

The first overtime went scoreless, with Wingate taking three shots while Saint Leo took zero. Garry (Greenwood, Ind.) registered saves on two of those shots, setting up the game-winner for the Lions.

Mars Hill, N.C.----Saint Leo sophomore midfielder Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) scored with 1:52 remaining in the second overtime, as the fourth seeded Lions of Saint Leo University defeated the top seeded and ninth-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs 8-7 in the first round of the Deep South Conference lacrosse tournament Friday afternoon at Meares Stadium.

The Lions improve to 7-7 overall; Wingate falls to 11-3. Saint Leo will face the winner of the Catawba vs. Mars Hill game Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the DSC Championship Game.

Junior attack Ryan Pomponio (Garden City, N.Y.) had three goals and an assist to lead the Saint Leo offense. Marceau added a pair of goals for the Lions. Junior attack Benjamin Brigham (Scituate, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Greg Geiss (Syracuse, N.Y.) had two assists each. Geiss picked up the assist on Marceau's game-winner.

Wingate senior attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with four goals and an assist. Junior attack Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) added a goal and an assist.

Pomponio got the scoring started less than three minutes in, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. He added his second goal of the game at the 3:44 mark of the first period, making it 2-0 heading to the second.

Costello registered Wingate's first goal 22 seconds into the second period to cut the Saint Leo lead in half. Senior midfielder Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.) tied the game with a goal at the 7:56 mark. Costello collected his second goal of the game with 30 seconds remaining in the half, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead heading into intermission.
