Thayer Leads Williams to Upset at No. 12 Trinity

Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore attacker Whitney Thayer (Lancaster, Pa.) scored four goals, including the game-winner in the second half to lead the visiting Williams College Ephs to a 13-11 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 12 in the nation, falls to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the NESCAC, while the Ephs improve to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the league with their third straight victory.

Thayer ignited a 5-0 Williams run with a goal from sophomore midfielder Whitney Kelly (Weston, Mass.) that gave the Ephs a 9-8 lead with 19:50 remaining in the game. Thayer added her fourth goal of the game to give Williams an 11-8 lead and two more scores by the visitors upped the advantage to 13-8 with 8:40 on the clock. Trinity senior captain C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, Mass.) scored two of her game-high five goals and freshman midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) added a goal in the final six minutes to cut the Williams lead to two, but the Ephs possessed the ball for the majority of play down the stretch.

After Yanofsky opened the day's scoring with a free position goal 2:19 into the contest, Williams rattled off six unanswered goals, including two by Thayer, to take a commanding lead with 16:49 remaining in the first half. Trinity sophomore midfielder Sarah Remes (Silver Spring, Md.) netted the second of five free position goals for the Bantams in the first half, ending the Trinity scoring drought with 14:21 before the break, and the Bantams scored three more times before Eph junior midfielder Julia Nawrocki (Winchester, England) rifled in a shot from outside the circle to make the score, 7-5, in Williams' favor. Romanowsky scored a late goal to cut the lead to one in the final minute.
