Crowley's OT Goal Gives Stony Brook Win at Binghamton
Vestal, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2008) – Freshman Kevin Crowley's (New Westminster, British Columbia) goal 15 seconds into overtime capped a late comeback and gave Stony Brook a thrilling, 7-6, overtime win in men's lacrosse action at Binghamton. Freshman Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) scored with less than a minute left in the game to send it into overtime, setting up Crowley's game-winner. The victory clinched a berth in the America East Tournament in May for the Seawolves.
"I am happy to come out of Binghamton with a win," said Stony Brook head coach Rick Sowell. "They (Binghamton) did a nice job with their defense, but we hung in there and did what we had to do to win. It was not our best day offensively, but it was nice to see us respond to the last goal that they scored and come back to tie it and then win it in overtime."
Binghamton (3-7, 1-3 America East) scored what appeared to be the game-winner when Jeff Rurey scored with just 1:45 left in the game, putting the Bearcats up 6-5. With time starting to run out on Stony Brook (7-4, 3-1 America East), the Seawolves gained possession of the ball and senior Rhys Duch (Victoria, British Columbia) found McBride open, and with 49 ticks left on the clock he found the back of the net for his third score of the game to send it into extra time.
Freshman Adam Rand (Niantic, Conn.) won the opening faceoff in the overtime and quickly moved the ball into the offensive zone. Crowley got the ball and went straight to the goal, rifling a shot that beat Bearcat goalie Larry Kline for the game-winner.
Stony Brook started by scoring the first goal of the game, with McBride putting one away at the 7:18 mark of the first quarter. Binghamton did not was any time answering, taking the ensuing faceoff and scoring just six seconds later to knot the score at 1-1. Andy Cook, who scored the first goal, found the back of the net again at the end of the quarter to give the Bearcats their first lead of the afternoon, 2-1.
Binghamton's deliberate offense and turnovers kept Stony Brook from getting many scoring chances, but the Seawolves still managed to score twice in the opening minutes of the second quarter, getting goals from Crowley and senior Michael Trojanowski (Hicksville, N.Y.) to retake the lead at 3-2. Binghamton came back again in the last nine minutes of the quarter, however, answering Stony Brook's two with a pair of its own. When Cook scored his third of the half with 1:26 left, he gave the Bearcats a 4-3 advantage at the intermission.
Binghamton moved its lead to 5-3 six and a half minutes into the third, but McBride answered just six second later for the Seawolves to make it 5-4. Five minutes later McBride found Crowley and the freshman tied things up for the fourth time during the afternoon.
After that it became a defensive battle, with neither team able to deliver for over 16 minutes until the Bearcats scored their late goal that set up the thrilling finish for Stony Brook. The Bearcats used their deliberate offense to out shoot the Seawolves, 35-24, but Stony Brook won all but one face off in the second half to win 10-of-17 for the game while also picking up more ground balls than its opponent by a 34-26 margin.
McBride and Crowley each scored three goals for Stony Brook to lead the team, while Cook's three in the first half led Binghamton. Sophomore Rob Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.), making his first start in goal since the opening game of the season, made nine saves and picked up six ground balls.
Stony Brook will play its final home game of the season when it hosts local rival Hofstra at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 in LaValle Stadium. The game will be carried live on MSG-TV.
