Cortland Beats Buffalo State to Go 5-0 in SUNYAC

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored five goals and added an assist and became the 30th player in school history to reach 100 career points as the Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Buffalo St., 14-7, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 9-5 overall and took sole possession of first place in the conference with a 5-0 mark. The Bengals fell to 6-3 and 4-1.

Senior Rachel Cornwell (Fairport) scored four points on three goals and an assist for the Red Dragons, and junior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) added a pair of scores. Senior Jen Pacifico (Sachem), sophomore Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshmen Megan Clare (Shirley/William Floyd) and Bri Shost (Mahopac) each scored one goal. Junior defender Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/ Suffern) recorded five caused turnovers and eight ground balls. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) made 10 saves.

Senior Katie Lyons (Williamsville/Williamsville North) and sophomore Molly Seifritz (Syracuse/Henninger) led the Bengals with two goals apiece. Senior Shantel Ackley (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and sophomores Katie Henderson (Lakeview/Frontier) and Joni Squire-Hill (Ohsweken, ON/Hagerville) scored one goal each, while sophomore Stephanie Georgopolous (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) added two assists. Freshman goalie Ashley O'Brien (Lima/Honeoye Falls-Lima) stopped nine shots.

Cortland held just a 4-3 lead with seven minutes, 16 seconds remaining in the opening half before scoring four of the last five goals of the opening 30 minutes for an 8-4 lead. The game stood at 10-6 at the 21:13 mark of the second half when the Red Dragons scored four straight, including two from Fritz, to take a commanding 14-6 lead with 6:30 on the clock. Squire-Hill completed the scoring with a goal at the buzzer.
