Red Dragons Overcome Sluggish Start to Win

The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team overcame a sluggish opening 12 minutes in today's SUNYAC contest with Potsdam before dominating the final 48 minutes in taking the win 21-12 at home. The win for the Red Dragons raised its overall record to 9-5 and 3-2 in the SUNYAC while the Bears fall to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in conference action.

The visitors jumped out quickly this afternoon building itself a 6-2 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game. Six different players tallied a goal for the Bears while sophomore Kelsey Shoen (Waddington/Madrid-Waddington) added an assist on Potsdam's fifth goal before registering the sixth goal for the Bears.

The goal by Shoen would be Potsdam's last goal of the half as Oneonta assumed control of the game with 11 unanswered goals over the final 18 minutes to take a 13-6 halftime lead.

Senior Michelle Arket (Scotia/Scotia Glenville) got things started for Oneonta with an unassisted goal 11:55 into the contest. Arket would add another goal less than four minutes later to give the Red Dragons the lead for good.

Junior Brianne Ruzek (Mineola/St. Mary) completed Oneonta's first half run with three straight goals. Ruzek added one more goal in the second half to finish as the leader today with four goals.

Potsdam opened the second half with three straight unassisted goals including Shoen's second of the game to vut Oneonta's lead to 13-9.

The Red Dragons closed the door for good as they rebounded with six straight goals including a pair each by sophomore Laren Portnoy (Sea Cliff/North Shore) and senior Jenna Fingar (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy).

Oneonta freshman Katie O'Toole (Long Beach/Long Beach) was the leading point scorer today with two goals and three assists for five points.

Oneonta will be home this coming Tuesday against rival Cortland, who currently sits atop the conference standings, for another SUNYAC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
