Cronin Leads Dowling Past Regis (CO)

Brookhaven, NY – Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, NY) had a game high 7 points (5G, 2A) as Dowling defeated the Regis University Rangers 21-9 at Golden Lions Field. The win improves Dowling's record to 7-4 as Regis drops to 1-10.

The Golden Lions jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind the strength of sophomore attack Melanie Burgos (Coram, NY), who scored the first and last goal of the run. The Rangers would cut the deficit to within 2 goals twice (5-3, 7-5), as Lillian Yanni scored twice for the Rangers. Burgos would then find a cutting Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, NY) to regain their 3 goal advantage and Cronin's first of the game would push Dowling's lead to 4, 9-5. The Rangers and Golden Lions would trade goals as the score was 10-6 going into halftime.

The second half was all Dowling, a 9-1 by the Golden Lions put the game out of reach. Cronin was big for the offense, netting 4 of her 5 goals in the half and fellow freshmen Kelly Cefalu (East Islip, NY) netted 3. The Golden Lions stifling defense, led by Kristen Matos (Deer Park, NY) held the Rangers to only 3 goals on 5 shots.

In the game, seven different Golden Lions found the back of the net, with Cronin (5), Cefalu (5) and Burgos (Coram , NY) (4) combining for 14 goals. Leading the way for the Rangers was Kelsi Goings who finished with 3 goals.

Dowling returns to action Wednesday in their last home game of the season against #3 Adelphi. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
