Sprole Leads Tigers Past Wittenberg

Freshman attacker Hunter Sprole recorded season highs of four goals and five points as the Colorado College men's lacrosse team came from behind to defeat Wittenberg University, 15-12, on Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio.

Sprole had two goals and assist during the fourth quarter when the Tigers outscored WU, 6-2, to overcome a 10-9 deficit at the start of the period.

Colorado College got goals from nine different players, including four from senior midfielder Hunter Combs. Senior attacker Tom Dugan added a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who snapped a three-game skid to even its record at 4-4. Wittenberg slipped to 5-6 overall.

Combs and Sprole scored 10 seconds apart early in the second half to give CC a 7-6 lead, but WU countered with a 4-1 run to grab a 10-8 advantage on the second of two straight man-up goals by Jeff Capella with 1:30 remaining in the third period.

CC responded with three consecutive goals to take an 11-10 lead, but sophomore midfielder Ted Winders forced one more tie 29 seconds after Combs put Colorado College ahead with a man-up goal.

Combs put CC ahead for good with 10 minutes remaining in the game, part of a 4-1 run that put the game away.

Winders lead the Wittenberg attack with four goals. Sophomore attacker Mike Reinberg and freshman midfielder Mitch Cohagan had two goals and an assist, while senior attacker Brandon Hulett scored once and set up three scores.

Freshman Scott MacArthur made six saves in the second half to earn the victory in goal. Classmate Max Pluss started the game and made a pair of saves in the opening 30 minutes. Freshman Mike DeOliveira stopped 11 shots for Wittenberg.

Sophomore defender Mike McGeary had a team-high six ground balls to lead the Colorado College defense, while sophomore midfielder Alex Osmond won eight of 13 draws.

CC will continue its run of six consecutive road games next weekend, when the Tigers take on Sewanee and Hendrix College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in Sewanee, Tenn.
