Villa Julie Kocks off York in CAC Tournament
York, Pa - The number 5 seeded Villa Julie College Women's Lacrosse Team traveled to #4 York College in the CAC First Round. The Mustangs made history by producing a stunning display to win 13-11. With the win, they recorded the most wins in a season (12) and the most wins in a row (7). The Mustangs will now meet the number one team in the country, Salisbury University, in the CAC Semi-finals on Tuesday.
When the Mustangs and Spartans met in the regular season, it was York who came away victorious with a 16-12 win. There was to be no repeat as the Mustangs captured their seventh win in a row. After a substantial rain delay, Villa started on the right foot when Kristina Hnizda hit the back of the net three minutes into the game. York responded almost immediately but four unanswered goals from the Mustangs had the Spartans reeling. Lisa Baker, Jamie Jones (2), and Lauren Zegowitz recorded the goals. Three goals in a ninety second spell brought York back to within one but Zegowitz hammered home her second goal of the game to give VJC a 6-4 lead with 13 minutes remaining. York produced a surge, scoring three unanswered goals to take their first and only lead of the game. The momentum then swung back to Villa as they scored three goals in fourty seconds through Hnizda and Baker (2). York would hit one more to cut the lead to one going into the break.
The second half was not as open as each team's defenses stepped up to shut down their opponents attacking options. York tied up the game but again a three goal streak for the Mustangs catapulted them to a 12-9 lead with 14 minutes to go. Zegowitz completed her hat-trick, followed by a Megan Weiss goal and a Cat Connelly free position shot. York pulled one back but Baker grabbed her fourth goal of the game with 2 minutes remaining to secure the win. The Spartans hit one more but it was too little too late as Villa gained sweet revenge for their regular season loss.
Lisa Baker finished with 4 goals and 1 assist, followed by Lauren Zegowitz with 3 goals and 2 assists. Mandi Carr helped give the Mustangs possession of the ball with 6 Draw Controls with Kristina Hnizda also controlling the ball with 5. On defense, Ashley Cathcart terrorized the Spartan attack with 6 Caused Turnovers, followed by Zegowitz's 4. The defense of Brittany Hilton, Jess Dixon and Tricia Kauffman helped keep the York attack at bay. Devan Malone and Kait Brzozowki each played 30 minutes in the win.
