#1 Salisbury Runs by VJC to Advance to CAC Title Game
SALISBURY, Md. - For the sixth consecutive year the Salisbury University women's lacrosse team will host the Capital Athletic Conference championship game as the top-seed Sea Gulls walloped fifth-seed Villa Julie College 23-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
Salisbury (19-0) tied the school record for regular season victories as the Gulls chalked up win No. 19. The top-ranked Sea Gulls will host No. 15 St. Mary's (Md.) College on Friday or Saturday evening (still to be determined) in the 10th straight appearance for the Gulls in the CAC title game. Salisbury is the five-time defending conference champion, as the Sea Gulls have won seven titles since 2000. The second-seed Seahawks knocked off third-seed University of Mary Washington, ranked 20th in the country, 20-10 in the other CAC semifinal game on Tuesday.
Sophomore Beth Rhodey led all-scorers with seven points as she matched her season-high of goals with six and added an assist. Salisbury scored six of the first seven goals to start the game. Sophomore Kim Cudmore (three goals, one assist) scored three consecutive goals in two minutes to help the maroon and gold to their 6-1 lead. Seniors Jessica Liston (four goals) and Sue Ackermann (two goals, two assists) combined to record eight points in the first half. SU went on an 11-0 run to close out the first half as the Gulls led 17-3 at the intermission.
In the second half, freshman Logan Bilderback (one goal, three assists) scored three of her four points. Senior Alexis Morrell (two goals, one assist) scored her second goal of the game on a free position shot to give SU a 20-5 lead. The Sea Gulls had 11 different goal scorers in the game. Junior goalie Sonja Stuart (two saves) played one half in between the pipes to improve her season record to 19-0 for the maroon and gold.
Villa Julie (12-5) was led by sophomore midfielder Lauren Zegowitz who scored two goals and had one assist. Salisbury outshot Villa Julie 47-13 and won 22-of-32 draw controls. The Sea Gulls scored 6-of-11 free position shots as Mustangs committed 33 fouls and turned the ball over 24 times.
