Rival Red Dragons Down Oneonta
Junior Danielle Torre (Massapequa/Massapequa) scored three goals and added two assists to lead visiting Cortland to a SUNYAC win against Oneonta State 13-7. The win for the Cortland (10-5/6-0) moves them to within one win of clinching the regular season title in the conference with two games remaining. The loss for Oneonta (9-6/3-3) puts them in a log jam in the middle of the conference standings as they try to secure a playoff spot with two to play.
The game actually started well for the hosts as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 16 minutes of play on three unassisted goals. Freshman Katie O'Toole (Long Beach/Long Beach) got things started in the ninth minute and was followed by senior Kristin O'Leary (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) and sophomore Michelle Symons (Verona/Verona).
From that point on it was all Cortland as they quickly erased the three-goal deficit and turned it into a 6-3 lead at halftime. Torre led the way with a pair of goals and two assists to lead Cortland to its six unanswered goals.
Cortland continued its run to start the second half as they added three more goals to its lead in the first eight minutes. Three unassisted goals by seniors Rachel Cornwell (Fairport/Fairport) and Jen Pacifico
(Sachem/Sachem) and sophomore Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) gave Cortland a 9-3 lead. O'Leary notched her second goal of the game to stop the run on an unassisted goal just under 10 minutes into the second half to make the score 9-4.
The final seven goals of the contest were all scored in the final eight minutes of the game including four by Cortland for the final margin of victory. Oneonta scored back-to-back goals within 30 seconds of each other to cut Cortland's lead to 11-7 with just over one minute to go, but the rival Red Dragons added a pair in the final minute of play for the 13-7 victory.
Oneonta will be on the road this Saturday at Brockport a key SUNYAC contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cortland scored nine consecutive goals to erase an early 3-0 deficit and the Red Dragons stayed unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 13-7 victory at Oneonta. Cortland remains in first place in the league at 6-0 and is 10-5 overall. Oneonta falls to 3-3 in the SUNYAC and 9-6 overall.
Eight different players scored for Cortland. Junior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) led the Red Dragons with three goals and two assists. Sophomore Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added two goals and one assist, while sophomore Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshman Megan Clare (Shirley/William Floyd) scored twice apiece.
Seniors Jen Pacifico (Sachem) and Rachel Cornwell (Fairport) totaled one goal and one assist each, and senior Elizabeth Acee (Syracuse/Henninger) and freshman Alyssa Hoover (Baldwin) scored one goal apiece. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) made 11 saves.
Kristin O'Leary (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) led Oneonta with two goals and Hillary Jacobson (Williamsville/Williamsville North) finished with a goal and an assist. Eileen O'Toole (Long Beach) recorded nine saves.

Cortland was held scoreless until Torre tallied with 9:19 left in the half, and the Red Dragons exploded from that point to score the last five goals of the half to lead 6-3. That run included a Clare goal with 53 seconds left and an Acee goal with just six seconds on the clock.
