W&J Concludes Inaugural Season with Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team ended its first NCAA Division III varsity season with a 16-3 victory over Waynesburg University on Thursday evening at Alexandre Stadium.

Freshman Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) fired in six goals to lead the Presidents, while also adding one assist. Schrock finished her first collegiate season with 40 goals.

The Presidents scored the first three goals of the contest and held an 8-2 lead at halftime after Schrock scored two goals in the final 5:17 of the first half.

Washington & Jefferson ended the game with seven consecutive goals to breeze past the Yellow Jackets (0-10).

Junior midfielders Valerie Orzechowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Laura Peery (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) both added four goals and one assist for the Presidents.

Freshmen Shannon Wagner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.) and Diana Campbell (South Park, Pa./South Park) both netted second-half goals. Freshman Shannon Rainey (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also assisted on a pair of goals.

Freshman Amber Kuntz (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) had six saves in the final game of her first season as the W&J goalkeeper. Kuntz collected 89 saves in 2008.

Laura Rayle stopped a season-high 28 shots in goal for the Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg was out-shot by a 50-14 margin and committed 28 turnovers. W&J also held a 38-15 advantage in ground balls.

Washington & Jefferson racked up a 3-8 record during its first season under the leadership of Head Coach Kate Scattergood. The Presidents posted a 2-3 record at Alexandre Stadium.
