Redlands' 2nd-Half Surge Spoils Boxers' Season Finale
FOREST GROVE - After playing a close first half with Redlands, Pacific could not hold off an 11-goal second half surge as the Boxers dropped their 2008 season finale, 19-8, in women's lacrosse action at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Pacific trailed 8-5 at halftime before finding themselves outscored 11-3 in the second half. The Bulldogs (6-6) outshot the Boxers 48-24 for the contest and a 23-6 edge in draw controls. The Boxers, meanwhile, excelled in the open field with a 21-20 advantage in ground balls and committing two less turnovers than Redlands.
Lori Hanken (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) and Mimi Takamune (So., Mililani, Hawaii) each had three goals to lead the Boxers, while Lilia Lee (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) and Natalie Getchell (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) each tallied one. Christy Smith and Rosie Breen scored four goals apiece to paced Redlands. Aislynn Neish added three while Mary Shepherd, Lauren Matta, Liza Gay and Haley Kern each scored two.
The two teams traded goals over the first 15 minutes of the game, with Lee, Hanken and Takamune each tallying for the Boxers. Breen's goals at the 9:59 mark, however, sparked a four-goal run for the Bulldogs, culminating with a pair of strikes by Smith that gave Redlands the 7-3 lead. Pacific finished strong, with Hanken scoring two of the half's final three goals to bring the Boxers within 8-5 at intermission.
Takamune kept Pacific close single-handedly at the beginning of the second half, scoring back-to-back goals to bring Pacific within 8-7. That's as close as Pacific would get as Breen's goal at the 24:58 mark started a 6-0 scoring run for the Bulldogs, ending on Matta's strike at the 12:01 mark. Getchell snapped the string with her lone goal at the 11:17 mark, but Redlands kept control by scoring the last five goals.
Goalkeeper Valerie Nelson (Jr., Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) finished with eight saves in the loss. Redlands starting goalkeeper Lindsay Feig made seven stops in 48 minutes of work.
The Boxers close the season with a two-game improvement in their second season as a varsity program, compiling a 3-10 record.
