No. 14 Bowdoin Edges Williams in NESCAC Play
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Ali Draudt scored the game-winning goal with 2:35 remaining to give the Polar Bear women's lacrosse team a dramatic 11-10 win over Williams in both team's regular-season finale on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (9-6, 4-5) earn the sixth seed in the conference's postseason tournament that begins on Sunday. They will play at Trinity at noon in a first-round game. Williams' season comes to an end with a record of 6-8 (2-7).
Saturday's game proved to be a contest of runs, as Bowdoin scored the first three goals only to see Williams roll off three of their own immediately after. The Polar Bears answered with another three-goal spurt and Bobbi Dennison's three first-half goals gave the hosts a 7-5 lead at the break.
Bowdoin pushed the lead to four goals, 10-6, on another Dennison goal with 17:45 remaining, but Williams rallied to score four times in the next 10:20 and deadlocked the game on a Tina Nawrocki goal with 7:25 left. The teams traded possessions, setting the stage for Draudt's heroics.
Lindsay McNamara circled behind the Williams net and found Draudt streaking to the net. Draudt one-timed the feed into a high corner, beating Ephs netminder Julia Schreiber for the go-ahead score. Williams had a final opportunity with under a minute to play, but couldn't get a shot off as the Polar Bears collected a loose ball and clung to victory.
Dennison finished with a game-high four goals on "Senior Day" in Brunswick. McNamara had three goals and an assist to support the Bowdoin offense as Stef Collins-Finn made eight saves between the pipes. Britt Spackman led Williams with three goals and an assist while Sara DuPont netted a pair of tallies. After allowing three goals on three shots to start the contest, Schreiber settled down in net for the Ephs, stopping 15 shots in defeat.
