Oneonta Downs Brockport in Overtime Thriller

Senior Tyler Dunne (Cazenovia/Cazenovia) scored with 2:07 remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period to lift Oneonta State to a 13-12 win against Brockport in SUNYAC men's lacrosse action today. The win for Oneonta (7-7) was its fourth straight and earned them the final playoff spot for the conference tournament, which begins this Wednesday. The Red Dragons semifinal opponent will be the top-seeded Cortland Red Dragons scheduled at the site of the latter beginning at 4:00 p.m.

The game was sent into the extra period when Brockport sophomore Adam Drypolcher (Manilus/Fayetteville-Manilus) scored a man-up goal to tie the score at 12 apiece with 2:41 remaining in the fourth period. Despite being a man down in the final 30 seconds of the game, the Golden Eagles were able to prevent Oneonta from scoring, which forced the overtime.

The opening half of the contest belonged to Oneonta as they built themselves a 6-2 lead while also holding a decided advantage in shots at 28-12.

Junior Kevin McSloy (Kings Park/Kings Park) led Oneonta with two goals and one assist in the first half while sophomore Matt Harvey (Bay Shore/Islip) converted on an extra-man opportunity for the Red Dragons in the second period.

Brockport (6-7) outplayed Oneonta in the third quarter controlling the action for the entire 15 minutes of the period to the tune of a 23-5 advantage in shots and a 6-1 score to take an 8-7 lead entering the final period of play. Drypolcher scored a pair of goals in the third period as did junior Brad Olzinski (Johnson City/Union-Endicott).

The action in the fourth period went back-and-forth as the pace of the game quickened. During the final 15 minutes there would be three lead changes and four ties including the one at the end of regulation.

A pair of goals by freshman Andy Hilton (Rochester/Gates-Chili) gave Oneonta its lead back at 9-8 with 11:33 left before Drypolcher's third goal of the game tied the score again less than 30 seconds later.

Senior Rob Hildebrand (Wantagh/Wantagh) gave Oneonta the lead back at 10-9 before a pair of goals by sophomore Pat Reilly (Fairport/Fairport) gave the lead back to Brockport with 6:16 to go in the game.

A third goal by Hilton in the quarter tied the score again at the 4:32 mark before a goal less than a minute later by junior Dennis Headrick (Kings Park/Kings Park) gave Oneonta the lead back at 12-11, setting up Drypolcher's heroics that tied the score.
