Collison Leads No. 20 Union to Record Program Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. Senior Chris Collison (Trumbull, Conn.) registered a career-high seven points with four goals and three assists to lead the 20th-ranked Union College men's lacrosse team to a 15-4 win over Merchant Marine Academy on senior day at Frank Bailey Field Saturday evening. The win marks a modern day program record 11th on the season for the Dutchmen, who close out the regular season at 11-3 overall and 4-2 in Liberty League play.

Freshman Brendan Kinnane (Little Compton, R.I.) added two goals and a helper, while sophomore Andrew Higgins (Wrentham, Mass.) also notched a pair of tallies. Chris Jacobson (Northborough, Mass.) scored once and added two assists, while Scott Garibaldi (Summit, N.J.) picked up two helpers.

Merchant Marine leading scorer Brennan Dougherty led the Mariners (8-8, 4-2 Landmark) with three goals.

Senior Jon Miller (Yarmouth, Maine) opened the scoring with his team-leading 27th goal of the season less than three minutes into the game, sending the Dutchmen on a seven-goal run that saw them hold a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Charles Hovsepian (Hingham, Mass.), Jacobson and Collison scored within a span of 2:03 late in the frame.

Kevin Rautenstrauch (West Seneca, N.Y.), who was 7-for-10 in faceoffs on the day, gave the Dutchmen their seventh goal to start the second quarter just seven seconds into it after scooping up the draw and maneuvering down the field for his second goal of the season.

Dougherty put the Mariners on the board at 9:14 of the second quarter, but immediately off the following faceoff, Kinnane converted a Collison feed to put the Dutchmen up, 8-1, and kick off another Union run, this time of five goals.

Collison recorded the next three goals, capping his scoring with a man-up tally at 9:03 of the third quarter before assisting on fellow classmate Tom Simmons' (Salisbury, Conn.) 15th goal of the year just over two minutes later.

The Mariners struck with the next two goals, first from Robert Atkinson, then with Dougherty's 29th on the year to cut the Dutchmen's lead to 12-3.

Kinnane, Higgins and senior Pye Russell (Acton, Mass.) finished the scoring for the Dutchmen with tallies in the fourth before Dougherty netted his third with 6:02 remaining in the game.

Christopher Keinath (Wilbraham, Mass.) made four saves in his 10th win of the season, while Keegan Boyle took the loss for the Mariners with eight goals allowed in the first 23:53 of the game; he made six saves before being replaced by Robert Boyd, who made four saves and allowed six goals in 29:12. Scott Bridge made a save and allowed a goal in the final 6:55.

The Dutchmen dominated in faceoffs, led by Rautenstrauch and senior Doug Richardson (Lynnfield, Mass.), who was a perfect 8-for-8 on the day.
