#15 St. Mary's Wraps up Regular Season with Road Win
Ashland, Va. – Junior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) matched her career-high with seven goals and equaled her season-best with eight points, as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team handed Randolph-Macon College a 19-13 setback in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
The Seahawks (14-5) will now wait to see if their name will be among the 26 teams selected by the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Committee to participate in the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The tournament bracket will be released on Sunday, May 4. St. Mary's finished as the Capital Athletic Conference Runner-Up for the second time in program history, having come in second as well in 2004.
Randolph-Macon (6-11) owned a 5-3 lead at 19:05 behind a pair of goals from Alex Wright. The Seahawks erased that two-goal deficit with a 5-0 run as Carrier scored twice. St. Mary's would never relinquish that lead as SMCM carried a 13-8 advantage into halftime.
After being up by two in the game's first 10 minutes, the Yellow Jackets were only able to get within two on two separate occasions in the first half.
In the second stanza, the Seahawks grew their lead to eight at 1:38 as senior midfielder Elizabeth Northfield (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) found the back of the net for her first of the day with sophomore attacker Christy Scaljon (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco) assisting on the play.
For the third time this season, St. Mary's registered a season-low nine turnovers, including only making three in the first half.
Sophomore attacker Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) contributed six points (4g, 2a) in the win, while junior midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) added four goals and sophomore attacker Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) dished out a game-high four assists.
Sophomore defender Karisa Carroll (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) helped SMCM claim a 21-14 advantage in ground balls with five loose ball pick-ups, while winning four draw controls.
Morgan Hutchinson paced RMC with four goals and an assist, while Wright finished with a hat trick. Lacy Phelps won a game-high six draws and chipped in a goal and two assists.
Freshman Ella Schoming (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) registered 10 saves, including nine in the first half, in the Seahawk win. Lindsay Schabert recorded five stops and gave up 16 goals in 47 minutes.
