Bryant Holds off Bentley in Northeast-10 Tournament

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Bryant University junior Delia Glover (Marston Mills, MA) scored six goals while senior Caitlin Hansen (Spring Lake, NJ) added five as the Bulldogs held on down the stretch for a 15-13 win over Bentley College in a Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse quarterfinal round game Wednesday at the Bryant Turf Complex.

Bryant, the third seed of the tournament, will travel to Manchester, NH to face second-seed Southern New Hampshire this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Bentley, which got three goals from Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover, MA) and Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, IL), ends its season at 7-10.

Bryant (10-7), looking to avenge an overtime loss to the Falcons back in March, took a 9-5 lead into the halftime break and stretch its lead to 13-7 following goals from Glover, Allison Faiola (Billerica, MA) and Hansen midway through the second half.

But the Falcons would not go away quietly as Ritchie scored a pair of pretty goals and Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, NY) followed with a goal at 16:17 to pull to within 13-10.

Later, a free position goal from Glover made it 15-10 but Morris and Griffin were there to make it a 15-12 game with just over three minutes to go. Liz Goddard (Acton, MA) made it a two goal difference with a quick strike with 1:31 left, but a late offensive charging call helped allow the Bulldogs to run out the clock and advance.

Hansen finished with seven ground balls in the game while Jessica Bolton (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) made 10 saves in net.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Delia Glover (Marston Mills, Mass.) scored six goals and senior Caitlin Hansen (Spring Lake, N.J.) added five to lead Bryant to a 15-13 win over Bentley in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Turf Complex. The Bulldogs, the third seed in the tournament, improved to 10-7 and now advance to face second-seeded Southern New Hampshire in the conference semifinals on Friday night in Manchester, N.H. The sixth-seeded Falcons concluded their season with a 7-10 record.

Bryant took an early lead and never trailed in the contest. Hansen scored three goals in the first eight minutes of the game with a strike from Glover in the mix to boost the Bulldogs to an early 4-0 edge. Senior Bridget Fitzgerald (Winchester, Mass./Winchester HS) broke through for Bentley, but sophomores Eliza Desmarseilles (Branford, Conn.) and Allison Faiola (Billerica, Mass.) answered for Bryant to take a 6-1 lead with 12 minutes before halftime.

A pair of goals from senior Beth Gendron (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) and a tally from classmate Liz Goddard (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough HS) brought the Falcons back within two, but Glover and Hansen combined for three more Bulldogs goals before junior Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover, Mass./North Andover HS) got on the board for Bentley in the final minute of the opening frame to make it a 9-5 Bryant lead at the half.

Glover and sophomore Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) each traded a pair of goals to open the second half before Faiola and Hansen struck to give the Bulldogs a six-goal edge. The Falcons cut that lead in half once again with Ritchie netting a pair before junior Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs HS) scored to make it 13-10 midway through the final frame.

Faiola netted the eventual game-winner with 11:11 on the clock and Glover added another with 4:02 to go to give Bryant enough to withstand Bentley's final charge. Morris and Griffin scored ten seconds apart, then Goddard struck with 1:31 on the clock to make it a two-goal game, but that was the final margin as the Falcons were unable to get off another shot.

With three goals in the contest, Griffin broke the Bentley record for goals in a season, finishing her sophomore campaign with 50 goals, one better than the previous mark set by Lauren Ferraro in 2000.
