Cortland Edges Brockport for 10th SUNYAC Title in a Row

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Rachel Cornwell (Fairport) scored with 20 seconds left in regulation to lift the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 14-13 win versus Brockport Saturday afternoon in the SUNYAC Tournament championship game. The Red Dragons won their 11th consecutive game, 10th conference tournament title in a row and secured an automatic NCAA berth as they improved to 14-5 overall on the season. The Golden Eagles, who fell to Cortland, 16-14 in overtime at home earlier in the season, dropped to 12-4 with the setback.

Cornwell finished the game with three goals. Junior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) led Cortland with six points on four goals and two assists and was named the Most Valuable Player, while senior Elizabeth Acee (Syracuse/Henninger) added three goals and an assist. Senior Beth Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee), sophomore Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and freshmen Megan Clare (Shirley/ William Floyd) and Bri Shost (Mahopac) each scored one goal. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) stopped seven shots.

Sophomore Lexie Goodhart (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) led the Golden Eagles with four goals and three assists. Senior Julia Decker (Penn Yan) scored three times, senior Kim Winslow (Auburn) and junior Kim Morris (Clay/Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded two goals and an assist and senior Carrie Kane (Rochester/Irondequoit) added three assists. Freshman goalie Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale/Sayville) made 10 saves.

Brockport jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the first half as five different players found the back of the net. The four-goal lead would be the largest of either team in the game. Cortland answered with a five- goal run to grab a 6-5 lead with five minutes, 43 seconds remaining in the half. Winslow and Cornwell traded goals to make it a 7-6 game at intermission.

The largest lead the rest of the game was a two-goal advantage by Cortland at 8-6 after Acee opened the second half with a goal, and at 13-11 with 5:52 remaining. The Golden Eagles, who never led in the second half, continually battled back to tie the game up – 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11 – only to have the Red Dragons retake the lead.

After Goodhart netted her third of the game to tie the game at 11- all, Torre scored at 7:14 and then assisted on Shost's goal at 5:52. Brockport responded with a score from senior Jenny Baccile (Elmira/ Horseheads) at 3:48 to cut the lead to 13-12, then Goodhart tallied her fourth of the game at 43 seconds to tie the score at 13-13. Cortland won the ensuing draw control and Cornwell made a move on the right side to net what proved to be the game-winner. On the next draw control, Cortland was awarded possession after a Golden Eagle violation and nearly turned the ball over when Brockport graduate student Courtney Dean (Holland Patent) knocked down a pass. Elmer was able to recover the loose ball, however, and Cortland ran out the clock for the win.

Acee, Elmer, Cornwell and junior Lindsay Bakker (Sloatsburg/Suffern) joined Torre on the All-Tournament Team. Goodhart, Decker and Winslow were Geneseo's all-tournament selections. Rounding out the team were senior Christie Zaganiaczyk (Lancaster) and sophomore Emily Reichert (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) of Fredonia St. and sophomore Katie Henderson (Lakeview/Frontier) and freshman goalie Ashley O'Brien (Lima/Honeoye Falls-Lima) of Buffalo State.
