#10 Trinity Falls to #12 Babson in NCAA Tournament

Hartford, Conn. – Junior Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) totaled seven points on three goals and four assists to lead the visiting Babson College Beavers to a 19-10 win over the Trinity College Bantams in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament this afternoon on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 10 in the nation, closes the season with an 11-7 record, while the No. 12-ranked Beavers post a best-ever win total of 16 against just two losses with their fifth straight victory and their second triumph this spring over the Bantams.

Trinity freshman attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) opened the scoring 5:21 into the contest with a goal on a free position opportunity, but the Beavers scored the next three goals, including two by senior tri-captain midfielder Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.), and did not relinquish the lead after the 21:46 mark of the first half. Bantam freshman midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) cut the Beaver lead to 3-2 with 18:25 left in the first half, but Babson answered with another 3-0 run to increase their edge to 6-2 with 17:09 on the clock.

Godfrey assisted on two of the three Babson scores during the run. Irvine, Romanowsky, and fellow rookie Christy Bradley (Wellesley, Mass.) scored goals late in the first to pull Trinity within three at 9-6, but Martignetti and sophomore midfielder Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.) tallied for Babson to give the visitors an 11-6 advantage at the break. Trinity senior captain attacker C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, Mass.) scored twice in the first minute of the second stanza to cut the Beaver lead to 11-8, but Babson outscored the Bantams, 8-2, the rest of the way.
