RADNOR, Pa. (May 10) - The Cabrini College men's lacrosse team made history today with a 13-10 win over visiting Haverford College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championships. With the win, the Cavaliers (17-2) advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals, where they will take on the winner of tonight's game between top-seeded Salisbury State University and Ohio Wesleyan.
This marks the first time in college history that any Cavalier athletic team has reached the final eight in NCAA tournament play.
After taking a 6-5 lead at the half, the Cavaliers broke open a tight game during a 10-minute stretch in the third quarter as Cabrini's Paul Skulski snapped a 7-7 tie with his goal at the 5:40 mark. Scott Reimer then scored three straight goals for the Cavs and Casey Grugan added another tally to give Cabrini a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth period.
Haverford would not back down however as the Black Squirrels used two goals from Matt Hjelm and one from David Lawrence to cut the lead to 12-10 with 8:31 to play. That would be as close as Haverford would get as Reimer ended the scoring on the day when he took a feed from McKinney at the 1:29 mark to give Cabrini the final 13-10 margin.
Cabrini's Scott Reimer led all scorers with five goals while Grugan and McKinney each added two goals and one assist. Haverford was paced by Hjelm's three goals and three assists while Brian Fleishhacker collected two goals. Jake Mendlinger (six saves) and John-Paul Cashiola (one save) split time in the goal for Haverford. For the Cavaliers, Bobby Chambers made five stops in the first half before Kevin Chenoweth took over in the second half and made seven saves.
