Binghamton Lacrosse Announces '09 Schedule, Captains
VESTAL, N.Y.- Second-year Binghamton University women's lacrosse head coach Tony Zostant has announced the Bearcats' schedule and team captains for the 2009 season. Binghamton will celebrate the eighth season of intercollegiate women's lacrosse when they open their 16-game slate on Friday, February 20 at Duquesne against Denver University.
Senior Kara Slowik, junior Christina Smith, and sophomore Beth Moore have been named the 2009 team captains.
"We are excited to announce our captains for the 2009 season. These student-athletes all have great work ethic and have led by example from day one," head coach Tony Zostant said. "All three captains are very deserving of this honor and we look forward to them directing and leading a very young squad (11 freshmen, 9 sophomores) in the 2009 campaign."
Following its season opener against the Pioneers, the Bearcats will return to Binghamton to host the first of seven home contests to be played at the Bearcat Sports Complex, against MAAC opponent Canisius.
The Bearcats will open the America East portion of its schedule when BU hosts Vermont on Saturday, March 21st. Binghamton will also host conference games against Albany and New Hampshire, while traveling to UMBC, Stony Brook, and Boston.
Non-conference opponents are set to include high-profile teams such as Temple, Colgate, Vanderbilt and Marist, all of which were 2008 NCAA Tournament Teams. Rounding out the non-conference shedule are St. Bonaventure, Bucknell, Monmouth and LeMoyne.
The Bearcats will certainly be tested this season, as four of the Bearcats 2009 opponents, Denver, Vanderbilt, Boston University, and University of New Hampshire were ranked in the Top 20 last season.
The top four teams during the regular season will qualify for the America East Championship with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The tournament will be hosted at the highest seed and will run April 24-26.
