Defending CAA Champ Towson Announces '09 Schedule

TOWSON, Md. – Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, the Towson University women's lacrosse team will open its 2009 season on March 1 by traveling to Mount St. Mary's University for a 1:00 p.m. game against the Mountaineers, it has been announced by Coach Missy Doherty. The defending CAA champion Tigers will play nine of their 16 regular season games at Johnny Unitas Stadium, including a stretch of six straight home games from March 17 to April 5.

"Our schedule provides us the opportunity to play some of the best teams in the country," says Doherty, who will begin her sixth season as the Tigers' coach. "It is great to compete against our local rivals and also have an extremely competitive conference schedule."

After opening the season with road games at Mount St. Mary's and UMBC, the Tigers open their home schedule on March 7 against local rival Loyola College in the second game of a doubleheader at Unitas Stadium at approximately 5:00 p.m. The Tigers will follow the annual game against the Greyhounds with a home game against Temple University on March 11 at 4:00 p.m.

Following a road contest at George Washington on March 18, the Tigers will embark on a six-game homestand beginning on March 17 against Syracuse University, which reached the NCAA semi-finals a year ago. The Tigers will entertain the University of Richmond at 12 p.m. in the opening game of a doubleheader at Unitas Stadium on March 21.

Before opening their Colonial Athletic Association schedule, the Tigers will host Maryland on March 24 and Johns Hopkins on March 29. On April 3, the Tigers will begin defense of their CAA championship by hosting William & Mary at 7:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's CAA title game, which the Tigers won by a 16-7 margin.

The Tigers will host Old Dominion on April 5 before playing their first conference road game of the year, a meeting at Hofstra on April 10. After returning home to face Drexel on April 12, the Tigers will end the regular season with three straight road contests against George Mason, James Madison and Delaware.

The CAA Championship will take place at the site of the regular season champion on April 30 and May 2 before the NCAA Tournament starts on May 10 with eight first-round games. For the second straight season, the Tigers will serve as hosts for the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championships, which will take place at Unitas Stadium on May 22 and 24.

The Tigers had a 13-6 record last year and won their second CAA championship in four years.
