William & Mary Lacrosse Names 2009 Team Captains
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Nov. 11, 2008) -- William and Mary lacrosse head coach Christine Halfpenny has announced the selections of senior Kate Lawlor, senior Julia Martin, senior Kari Fasick and sophomore Emily Geary as team captains for the 2009 season.
"I am so excited about the leadership this group brings to the Tribe this year," Halfpenny said. "All four individuals are highly respected by their peers and the coaching staff. They lead by example through hard work, determination and dedication. All four captains have shown the ability to lead both off and on the field, and I am excited to see their roles continue to develop throughout the off-season and pre-season. I am confident that this group will be an integral part of guiding the 2009 team in our quest for a CAA Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth."
One of the team's top defenders, Lawlor was a co-captain for W&M last year. The Philadelphia, Pa., native has earned 31 starts in the last two seasons and ranked seventh on the team in 2008 with 24 ground balls.
A dynamic offensive player, Martin registered 14 starts last season and finished the year with seven goals, eight assists, 16 ground balls and 19 draw controls. Additionally, she ranked fifth on the team with a .412 shooting percentage.
After playing her first two seasons at Ohio University, Fasick was an important reserve for the College in 2008 and appeared in nine contests. Her best performance last season came against Virginia Tech when she recorded six ground balls.
One of the top freshman goalkeepers in the nation last year, Geary earned second-team all-conference honors and was a member of the league's all-rookie team. The Wayne, Pa., native ranked fifth nationally in saves (193) and 12th in saves per game (10.0).
The Tribe, which returns 10 starters from last year's team that ranked 20th nationally in the final IWLCA poll, will begin the 2009 season when it hosts Longwood on Feb. 18.
