Cabrini Captains, Merchant Marine Schedule Announced
RADNOR, Pa. – Senior defenseman Jeff Moore (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), senior midfielder Pat Grenier (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) and junior attackman Casey Grugan (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) have been named Cabrini men's lacrosse team captains for the 2009 season, head coach Steve Colfer announced today. The Cavaliers open the season Wednesday, February 25 at Fairleigh-Dickinson University at 3:30 p.m.
Moore earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Honorable Mention accolades last season, starting 19-of-20 games at close defense. He posted a team-high 33 caused turnovers and ranked third on the squad with 58 groundballs. "Jeff is without question the leader of our team," Colfer said. "His play last year earned him All-America honors and he will again be asked to lead the defense and our team in 2009. He leads by example and his teammates follow."
Grenier started all 20 games in 2008. He totaled 29 groundballs and caused eight turnovers, playing a critical role on the Cavaliers' midfield line. "Pat is a throwback type of player," Colfer said. "He plays tough physical lacrosse and is always up for a challenge whether in practice or a game. Pat's understanding of our defensive concepts makes him similar to a coach on the field."
Grugan claimed third-team USILA All-America honors last season, listing second on the team with 70 points on 45 goals and 25 assists. Starting 19-of-20 contests, he notched six goals in man-up situations and collected 22 groundballs. "Casey plays hard every day of the season," Colfer said. "He does not take plays off. He will be asked to lead our offense this season and I know he is up for the challenge."
The Cavaliers hoisted the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) hardware for the eighth time in eight seasons in 2008. Cabrini advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year, dating back to the 2002 campaign. Colfer begins his ninth season with the Blue & Gray, boasting a 108-29 career record. He owns an unblemished 65-0 mark against teams from the CSAC.
The Cavaliers will meet four defending conference champions in 2009, including Centennial Conference winner No. 3 Gettysburg College and Old Dominion Athletic Conference winner No. 4 Lynchburg College. Eights squads on the Cabrini schedule played in the postseason one year ago, including four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
